That's a cute argument, until you remember that Golovkin barely has a resume, and that Alvarez has been fighting in his own personal weight class for the last few years, and that neither guy has beaten anyone worth mentioning in some time (sans Golovkin's win over Jacobs. That was impressive). Ward-Kovalev was billed as the fight that would determine the consensus P4P #1, and then it was glossed over for the next big "super fight."

Golovkin straight up ducked Ward on camera, so the idea that he could be the best P4P while Ward is still active and not showing any signs of decline, is asinine. It's compounded further when you consider that Ward beat an even better fighter than Golovkin anyway, and that no one with the slightest semblance of an objective boxing brain would pick Alvarez or Golovkin over Ward or Kovalev. I get that they're popular and that they have groupies, but neither guy should be particularly high on anyone's P4P list. No mind control should be that strong.

Actually, I didn't. Ward and Kovalev have both beaten better fighters, and have many more accomplishments, and are both better fighters. Just saying "I'm right and you're wrong" isn't proving anything. Golovkin has no resume (Jacobs is about it, considering that Sergio Martinez had already beaten most of his notable wins), and Floyd Mayweather/Erislandy Lara showed us the extent of Alvarez's abilities. Neither guy should be P4P #1 over 2 superior fighters because they fought each other. That's utterly ridiculous. If Sergey Kovalev maintained all of his abilities and moved up to fight Anthony Joshua, I would pick him to win. If Golovkin or Alvarez did it, I'd expect them to get stretched out. I'm not simply saying, "Ward-Kovalev can beat Golovkin-Alvarez, so the latter guys aren't P4P", I'm saying that the former guys have displayed higher skill against a higher class of opponent. I honestly don't think that much is up for debate.

To make it perfectly clear, Golovkin and Alvarez are one division away from Ward and Kovalev, and no one would pick them to beat those guys, but if Vasyl Lomachenko could somehow get to 175 with all of his abilities intact, I'd give him a damn good chance to win. The fact that Golovkin and Alvarez could both realistically fight these guys in their lifetimes, and no one thinks that they could beat them, is proof enough that they shouldn't be that high on a P4P list, or even on the thing at all.
