Comments Thread For: Loeffler Excited To Make Canelo vs. Golovkin a Reality

With much fan fare and hoopla, it was announced on Saturday night - after Saul Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) had easily disposed of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr - that 'Canelo' would be facing IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) on September 16th. Many were skeptical if this anticipated match-up would ever get done but Golden Boy Promotions and K2 Promotions were able to hammer out a deal.

The comparison between Canelo "moving up" and Golovkin potentially moving up is flawed. Truth is Canelo cannot make 154 any more...so he has to move up (or continue fighting at 155 (or 164.5, if the risk/reward ratio is right)). Golovkin still makes 160 comfortably.

I agree, though, that if Golovkin beats Canelo he SHOULD move up (or rematch Jacobs)...but not for the same reasons that Canelo needs to fight at the middleweight limit.

Fight Billy Hoe than Jacobs. If Charlo has built his name up by then make that fight.
Move up to 168 if your body can handle it at 36 or 37 father time will catch up sooner or later. If that happens retire undisputed middle weight champ. If not one at 168 go from there.

          I was wrong I was thinking 2018....

I figured Lemieux and Saunders would be Canelo's next foes with GGG late 2018. I think the Jacob's fight must have spooked GBP enough that they didn't want to risk one more fight. This should be an entertaining match up. I never thought Canelo was scared, I just thought Oscar was being cautious.

CANELO VS LIL G is great for boxing! They might have 3 fight trilogy if the 1st fight is as good as it should be!

It is hard to believe that Loeffler and GGG agreed on the most important items at the beginning and it was the "few small details" that took a long time. It seems that with promoters the first liar doesn't stand a chance. I recall that GGG and his team were complaining loudly that the $15 million plus offer was unfair. So either K2 thinks that was a small detail or they accepted the offer early on and decided to complain anyway or Loeffler is not telling the truth or he was misquoted. This saga has layers like a matroyoska doll (Russian nesting dolls)

How about giving it up to Loeffler & Golovkin for agreeing to "most everything from the beginning". Everyone knows GBP has been the hold up. From step aside for Khan, legal battles, weight, dropped belt, weak resume, Smith, Flat fee, Chavez. All the while DLH was in the press saying to take the fight, yet the fight wouldn't happen until Sept '17. So it appears that K2 did in fact agree to the terms but still that didn't expedite the fight at all. Wake up people.

Huge fight gets made and some are already questioning who is next? BJS/Khurt, Heiland/Charlo, Zurdo. Probably in that order with a Canelo &/or Jacobs rematch mixed in.

Props to ODLH and K2 for delivering this fight. It will be one of the best nights of boxing in recent memory. Since I criticized both sides for not getting it done, I must give credit when due.
