Where does GGG vs Canelo rank up in the ATG Match ups in the MW division?

It doesn't. One boxer is probably a top 3-5 MW ATG, the other has been a MW for years that's been fighting smaller guys or at catchweights. I like the fight but I don't compare it to any great fights.Comment

I'm gonna be laughing if it turns out to be war like Hagler-Hearns, that would be another win for the boxing world like Joshua/Klichko. It's 2 p4p guys facing each other, sure thing that fight will be important from historical point of viewComment

I hope so. This fight would put boxing back on the map If it exceeds the hype.Comment

Not that highly I would say, although a lot depends on how the fight turns out. Canelo is a significant fighter but he hasn't done anything at middleweight. Golovkin is a popular fighter but the middleweight division he's dominated is not a great one.
Off the top of my head, these are the most significant match-ups at middleweight in the last five decades:
Monzon - Griffith/Benvenuti
Hagler - Hearns/Duran/Leonard
Robinson - Fullmer/Olson/Basilio
Hopkins - Jones/Trinidad
That doesn't even consider the likes of Toney, McCallum, Giardello, Zale, Nunn, Graziano etc. So I reckon they are firmly in the chasing pack in those terms.
In modern terms they're probably not that far off. Martinez-Pavlik/Chavez and Pavlik-Taylor the only real competition. Obviously Hopkins-Oscar was big but a bit of a joke as well.Comment

Off the top of my head I'd say its closest analogue is Hopkins vs Trinidad
Obviously we can't judge its full significance until it happens though. If it's a dud it will get forgotten quickly, whereas if it's a total war or vintage schooling from either party then it could even grow in stature over timeComment

I wouldn't call Canelo that yet. He does have a better resume than Golovkin at MW though. Cotto>>>>>>>>>>Anyone Golovkin fought.Comment
