I am not comparing Tyson just the era. Would people even give a **** about Tyson nowadays like they did in the 80s-90's?

It's not a knock on Tyson or Wilder. It's a knock on the lack of fans of the sport period. With so many entertainment choices, something has got to lose. It appears to have been boxing in general.

I wouldn't call the buzz for Josh-Klit that much. They don't care about Wilder, what makes Joshua so special when they have an undefeated All-American boy in their backyard that they don't care about?

It's not even comp. Tyson got adored even beating the **** out of bums. Wilder didn't. He is a footnote in the sports section that's it.

Maybe boxing is just becoming so fringe that people don't even care about it in the U.S anymore.

I just think there was a huge vaccum of power when Tyson was done. (His popularity carried Holyfield and Lennox in the US market. Just check the numbers) That dude was a cultural obsession for being bizarre and inflicting pain.

It took Floyd a long time to get to that level (b/c Dela Hoya wasn't really that, just really popular, particularly with Latinos). But Floyd had a different brand than Tyson. Everything became about con****uous consumption (unbelievable wealth) and dominating media. This is why guys like Broner could pull 1 million views on Showtime when nobody else was (before getting worked by Maidana).

Now people don't care about the violence in fights in the US anymore. It's about personalities. Every once in a while a competitive fight will get some attention (Thurman - Garcia) but people like the glamour of it all. That's why Conor is so big here. He acts just like Floyd lol just an Irish version.

Same weird clothes, trash talk, money flashing, and ridiculous social media trolling.

Hip-hop has a huge influence on all of this btw...

People also don't really understand how "unpopular" (meaning they weren't selling a bunch of PPVs) guys like Roy, B-Hop, and Shane were. Based on their reputations you'd think they were killing PPV sales and making hundreds of millions of dollars. But that's far from reality. Roy's best PPV was with John Ruiz. B-Hop was with Oscar, and Shane w/ Floyd.

The rest of their PPVs weren't very strong. (Unless they were with Oscar, Floyd, or Manny)

Once the familiar faces from the Tyson era aged. The platforms they had went with them, and a lot of the guys in the Floyd era didn't do enough to carry a base. Broner was probably the closest but wasn't good/focused enough to hold it.

Notice I don't mention guys like Canelo. The Latino community is different if you look at the data. They buy a competitive fight on PPV if a Latino (or Manny) is involved. But most of those big names were carried through by Oscar. He's like the Tyson of that 98 - 2007 window for Latinos. Canelo really is the last US PPV "star" (hasn't cracked 1 million w/out Floyd yet) until somebody unexpectedly rises up. But it likely won't be because of in the ring behavior. It'll be cultural.

I used to be the biggest Wilder critic but he's slowly won me over. Not so much with his competition but he's consistently shown the desire and ability to close out the show.

Also I think his wildness so to speak in his attacks are overblown. He's shown a very good 1-2 and the ability to box. Plus his power is undeniable probably the biggest puncher at hw.

I agree with most of this except the "boxing" part. Yes he has a great 1-2, but he has a really hard time moving his feet. Particularly when being countered on that 1-2. He always falls back or stumbles, even against slow guys. That tells me he really hasn't focused on the fundamentals of slipping/side stepping a punch. His fights would be over much sooner, if he just focused on that one issue in his fight game. I wouldn't mind seeing some combinations too. But he's capable of stopping anybody.

Believe it or not, the fight has the potential to be a stinker. Both these guys can get you out of there with one punch, but it's the lulls in the action before that happens.
