They were trying to start the tradition of awarding this belt to the winner of the cinco de mayo fight. This wasn't supposed to be for one fight. I'm not sure if there was a sanctioning fee attatched to it or not. Canelo didn't mention that. He said they were doing it for publicity.

God damn I don't understand why boxing fans are so hostile to change. I think it's a cool idea.

I doubt that's their intent. Canelo is the only fighter going forward that will fight on 5 De mayo weekend. So they will only have this belts for canelo and not the other Mexican fighters? What about if canelo fights one of the charlo brothers and he loses, think the WBC going to give a Mexican belt, meant for Mexico, to a charlo bro? Lol I doubt it bro. So he admits he's mad at the WBC for forcing him to fight his mandatory. That's why he's rejecting the belt. It's not about money or a sanctioning fee. He feels disrespected by the WBC because they gave him 15 days to make a decision and wouldn't give him an extension. They really gave him 7 months to make a decision. From October when he fought Cotto and they gave him an extension to fight Khan in May.

So they wanted to be involved with canelo fights for years to come, we all know he is the one fighting on 5 de mayo, canelo had the right to say **** it, no one called you for this fight and i dont want it in the future..
Canelo already did the same to the wba when he fought lara, lara was given a belt that canelo lost to floyd so he wanted no part of them in his event...
