Cyclone From The Beehive State: Irrepressible Gene Fullmer

In that charmingly twisted language that only fighters can make sound sensible, Carmen Basilio once said of Gene Fullmer, “He did everything wrong, but he did it right.”

Carmen knew what he meant and so did the rest of us. Even though cold logic so often takes a battering in the crazy world of boxing, we tend to stick with it as a measuring tool when confronted by those fighters who puzzle us. We assimilate the facts and figures and try to reach a logical conclusion. Heck, it worked OK for Mr Spock. [details]

Mike, you really should teach a class in boxing history and in writing as well. Awesome stuff as always. Fulmer, I think because of his awkwardness, is constantly underrated as a middleweight champion. The man was a great fighter and should be recognized as such.

Also, I will say that left hook Robinson decked him with had to be, in the words of the late great Teddy Brenner, "the perfect punch". It was indeed a thing of beauty, regardless of which angle you view it from....and if it could separate the iron-jawed Fulmer from his senses, you know it had to be something special.

    Great read as always.
