Why call fighters that aren't as good "cans"?

But then I see them primarily called tomato cans and they aren't easy to crush.

Seriously I think all pro boxers deserve the respect not to be called bums or cans even if they are bums. The terms are very popular and often used on some good fighters.To show that much respect to all boxers is of course a personal choice.I have boxers I dislike like Broner and Khan and I might call them loud mouth braggers but I would never call them a bum or a can.

Why call fighters that aren't as good "cans"?
