  • Comments Thread For: Washington Passed on Helping Joshua To Join Klitschko Camp

Heavyweight contender Gerald Washington (18-1) had an offer to assist IBF world champion Anthony Joshua in training camp, but he passed on the offer to instead join the camp of former division ruler Wladimir Klitschko. Joshua will defend his title against Klitschko on April 29th, before a crowd of 90,000 fans at Wembley. The vacant WBA, IBO belts are up for grabs.

First comment. It makes more sense to spar with Wladimir. Wlad likely has another year or two of boxing IF he even beats Joshua; if he loses, it's pretty certain he will retire (or at most possibly take a "farewell" fight in Germany).

While Joshua has another decade left in boxing.

Washington is MUCH more likely to be in a situation to fight Joshua, than Wladimir.

If there's a chance you're going to fight somebody down the road, it makes sense for you to NOT want them to have the SLIGHTEST idea of what you're capable of. Even though sparring is NOT like a real boxing match, your sparring partner could still get a feel for your movements, inclinations, speed, power, angles, ticks, etc.

That, or it's simply the oldest justification/reasoning in the book: MORE MONEY...

Wilder, Joshua were former Klitschko sparring partners. Washington going where the champs go.

I get his reasoning, even if Joshua is the better fighter at this point, Wlad is going to have a lot more wisdom, experience to share.

He was probably a pic both for a bit of the style (with Joshua being far more fluid) and I'm sure WK would want Wilder if he can win this one. Wlad is so defensive but with KO power, I think he could give Wilder a lot of problems, too.

Obviously wants to learn from the best. Not from an over hyped bodybuilder who has fought no one.

Bibical tried to get all the help he can get!

Got altitude masks, top of the line nutritionist, A grade gear, and advanced biomedical industries aiding him but still won't be enough!

Wlad knocks him out and ends the hype train before it even left the station! G'night!

His reasoning makes sense and seems genuine. He can learn a wealth of things from being in a Klitschko camp.
