Honestly have to admit this is a very solid card they've put together. Probably go to the movie theater to watch this although don't be shocked if Matthysee and Taylor steal the show or at least give the main event a run for its money.

Mexican holiday. Two Mexicans have wanted to see fight 7 years or more. One is highly disciplined and the other not so much. One inherited the limelight, the other had to earn it. Solid under card. What's not to like. In this climate 750,000 PPV buys is huge. I am betting fight will approach that number and possibly $1 million.

No doubt, bigger venue at T-Mobile, the gate will definitely generate more than Cotto-Canelo did at 12,000 seat Mandalay Bay. The MGM was going through renovation at the time I think and T-Mobile as we know wasn't ready yet. As far as ppv buys we have to see how that translates.

If this was the Chavez Jr. from back in 2012 before he fought Martinez then yeah I would say for sure this fight does over 1 million ppv buys. I'm also just looking at the state of boxing right now. With PPV's not doing so well right now. It's a Mexican holiday but how many non-mexican fans will purchase the ppv, that is the question.

But, we will find out soon enough.



I mean IMO this is not a PPV fight. What has Chavez Jr done since Martinez to earn this kind of fight besides his name being identical to his legendary father. I know, I know that many, many, many people are going to buy the fight, I know. Such is the state of PPV today. But a PPV fight to me are fights like De La Hoya-Trinidad, Lewis-Holyfield, Canelo-Lara, Canelo-Cotto, etc, etc...........fights with proven quality fighters.

Day one I predicted this fight to do in between Cotto and Khan numbers landing probably at 800k buys. But based on tickets sales and the overall buzz just seems higher then the Cotto fight was and it's due to many factors, like I keep saying this fight is just promoted better. Cotto was clearly the more significant fight and he was a Hall of Famer and current top 10 P4P ranked fighter. Chavez is neither. But this has ACTUAL bad blood. These 2 guys hate each other and their rivalry goes back over 5 years. There are more story lines and intrigue based on the weight and it lands on a mexican holiday.

I think it has a shot to generate more then Cotto PPVs and crack 1m buys. But even if it does less then Cotto in PPV buys I think it's already a sure thing to generate more revenue total then Cotto. Based on larger live gate, the Mexican TV deal where both Azteca and Televisa are airing the fight and paying more money, more closed circuit tickets sold, ect. Golden Boy is not leaving a nickle on the table.

I doubt this fight does more than Cotto-Canelo in terms of ppv buys.

Outside of the Mexican fan base I don't see a whole lot of people buying this. With streaming online and different outlets these days. I seriously doubt it will do more than Cotto-Canelo, it may come close to that but I doubt it will do more.

if it somehow does do more than cotto vs Canelo which I doubt, it will speak to the ******ity of boxing fans and why Oscar is in no rush to make a Canelo vs ggg fight. Chavez Jr hasn't done anything credible in boxing in 5 yrs while Canelo has only had 1 credible fighter on his resume in almost 3 yrs (cotto) So the fact that there seems to be interest in this fight is strictly based on the names and it being a fight between 2 Mexicans on 5 de mayo weekend as opposed to it actually being a fight between 2 accomplished fighters. The only boxing related intrigue is to see how Canelo handles finally fighting someone who he won't outweigh on fight night and to see if Chavez can turn back the clock to 2012. Not nearly enough reason to spend $70 on a ppv nevertheless fly to Vegas for it.
