I remember Hunter said HBO forced Ward to move up to fight Kovalev because they didn't want Golovkin to be be beaten or something like that. Then the next day, Ward said no one forced him and it was his choice because he wanted Kovalev.

Interesting. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a bit of both.
It does seem that Ward specifically wanted Kovalev. He could have easily gone back to Showtime, took the belt off Stevenson, and would have had it made. I thought it was a mistake for him to go gunning for Kovalev but he did it carefully, won the belts, and will probably retain them so it looks like I was wrong.

Hope he sticks around long enough to fight Beterbeiv and Stevenson.

Ward shouldn't have to move anywhere, he's the P4P #1 fighter in the sport.

For you idiots who say that Golovkin won't move up and fight Ward, what about Ward going up to fight the Cruiserweights???? Nahhhh, you're right, that makes too much sense to say that too right??...

                  from the other thread.....

                  that is completely incorrect

Ward wanted 1 tuneup, he approached Team Bullshht immediately following the Smith fight in June 2015 only for Team "anyone from 154-168" to demand a 164lb catchweight

it stated that in this very article, and here is the proof.....

                  July 2015
Promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions, who handle IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs), says a fight can certainly be worked out with WBA super middleweight king Andre Ward (28-0, 15 KOs). But the deal would have to be under Golovkin's terms and not dictated by Ward. Loeffler feels Golovkin has surpassed Ward as a ticket seller and in terms of name recognition - making GGG the A-side of the negotiations.

                  and then again in September.....
Over the last few weeks, a lot has been said and a lot has been written with respect to a potential fight between WBA/IBO middleweight champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (33-0, 30KOs) and WBA super middleweight king Andre Ward (28-0, 15KOs). As the finishing touches were being made to Golovkin's October 17th unification with IBF champion David Lemieux - Ward's promoter, Roc Nation Sports Chief Operating Officer David Itskowitch, emailed an official offer to Golovkin's promoter, Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions.

some people find it easy to forget this happened.....

"I think you can assume that a fight between Triple G and Andre Ward is a fight that people would love to see. It would be great for HBO. I think, for the most part, everyone was on board - with the exception of Triple G and his camp. How do you respond in 36 minutes with a 'no' - unless you had no intention of fighting Andre Ward.

"The only way you respond in 36 minutes is if you had no intention of ever fighting this guy. That's what 36 minutes tells you. Because if they did had a desire to fight Andre, and get in there with one of the best fighters in the world, they would have responded with 'thank you for your offer, we're going to discuss this with our fighter and get back to you.' That's typically how it's done. You don't respond in 36 minutes.

We didn't have the opportunity talk about any details. To come out and say who would be the A-side and talk about splits, the reality was - they said 'no' in 36 minutes."

"Right now, Andre Ward is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world and they don't want nothing to do with him. I don't care what weight it is, I don't care what city it is, I don't care what country they fight in - they don't want nothing to do with the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. That's not on their agenda. They can continue to fight journeymen and protect his record and try to continue to build this invincibility aura that he currently has.....
                  "

only the very worst fanboys deny that ggg ducked Ward

helluva fighter, but it is what it is

and there you have it. ward officially ducks. i'll fight him at 168! oh wait....no i wont. just like we were saying he was a paper tiger. i'll fight you for a 50-50 split, while you are waiting for the wbc to mandate the fight agaisnt cotto or canelo, and if you give me tune ups first. cant believe some ward fanbyos fell for that sh-it without even looking into the details. they just heard they turned him down in 36 minutes and ran with it. ward knew he was waitin on the wbc and thats why he put the tune ups in the contract. if he really wanted to fight ggg he would have offered a fight right away. so cowardly.

prob because he already "beat" kovalev. if you can "beat" an opponent after getting dropped and losing 8 or 9 rounds thats a pretty easy standard to meet and he thinks he can do it again. all he has to do is win 3-4 rounds in the rematch and he "wins" again. he might even do better. all he has to do is match his terrible performance from the first fight. hell if there are 12 round 10s in which he was dominated he wins 120-108 across the board. life is good for ward.
