Which fighters could've had class, could've been a contender

But were either brought along too fast, had bad matchmaking, bad promoter, lawsuits, bad business moves, skipped out on name making fights and career ended up nowhere but had potential?

I think Fernando Vargas was brought up too fast and had too many tough fights in a short period of time. David Reid should have been brought up slower too. They both had more potential if they would've had more experience before fighting Trinidad for sure.

Joan Guzman ate his potential away.

You mean guys that never even reached contenter status? That's a tough one.

Hylon Williams Jr comes to mind. He fought Barthelemy early in his career which was too big a step up

          What about Winky Wright?

While Winky was more than just a contender, obviously a champion, title holder, and big name fighter in his time...but the guy rejected a DLH fight for very good money (guaranteed $6 mill + PPV) because he didn't like the PPV split. He also rejected a Taylor rematch for good money because he wanted 50-50 and not 55-45.

Wright could've been bigger, he just made some silly business moves. Should've fought Oscar.

Wright also wanted 50-50 to fight Mayweather when he was negotiating with Arum to make the fight. Mayweather was supposed to come up to 154 from 140 for the lion's share. Winky wanted the weight advantage and also not give up the lion's share to the much smaller fighter.

Junior middleweight kingpin Ronald "Winky" Wright told **********.com that unless Floyd Mayweather Jr. agrees to a 50-50 purse split, he can "forget about fighting me on November 12." Wright stated, "I didn't go looking for him, he's come looking for me and if he wants to fight me on PPV November 12, it's got to be 50-50." Wright doesn't want to hear about the risk Mayweather would be taking either. "People look at that and say, 'yeah Floyd is moving up all the weight and he's taking all the risk, but it's a risk for me too because after I'd beat him people would say it what I was supposed to do. I have nothing to gain by beating him. Look, I'll fight him but if it's not 50-50 down the middle on everything he could fight someone else. After my fights with Shane Mosley and the fight with Tito Trinidad that generated way more PPV's than his fight with Gatti, it has to be 50-50, otherwise it's not worth it to me." Regarding the $6M that was already refused to fight Oscar De La Hoya. "Look it's negotiation and when we were ready to keep talking to make it happen, Oscar said he wasn't fighting for the rest of the year, but if he's fighting on May 6 and he wants to make a fight, here I am."

Wright could've had two big name ATG's on his resume.

Na, it could be any situation where a fighter just didn't do as good as we thought because of certain things they did wrong outside the ring or things people did wrong to them.

For example, Winky Wright in my above post. Great fighter, great champion, but could've been better had he been wiser.

Freddie Pendleton, Emmanuel Augustus...to a certain extent Adrien Broner but his underachievement has to do with his own overconfidence and decision making.

Herol Graham was not a product of bad matchmaking but he was just unlucky with some in-fight decision making, he has to be one of the better fighters that never won a world title, and to be fair ironically around a similar time and weight, Michael Watson as well.

Guzman used to be one of my favorite fighters. I became a fan when I watched him fight Jorge Barrios. He was such a badass. His downfall started when he missed weight against Nate Campbell. He was never the same after. Waste of talent.
