  • Comments Thread For: Usyk Aims For The Goal of Unifying Cruiserweight Division

By Thomas Gerbasi - When he's not punching someone in the face, Aleksandr Usyk can usually be found with a smile on his face, a joke coming out of his mouth, magic tricks, or maybe even a song bellowing out to the world. In the process, it's made the WBO cruiserweight champion pretty popular these days. "I'm already popular?" he asks through manager / translator Egis Klimas. "I'm surprised...

The accomplishment of consolidating a division is not all the same and really overvalued in some cases IMO ; as it stands its more difficult for Uzyk because the titles are even more fragmented after Lededev got to keep his WBA title despite taking a official L to the new IBF champion Murat Gassiev.

If Uzyk rips these titles one by one that would be legendary -- HOF inbound with wins over : Glowacki ,Lebedev, Gassiev, Breidis, three of these guys would be undefeated by the time Usyk got to them and Lebedev maybe HOF.

Completely forgoth that both him and Gvozdyk are fighting on Lomachenko's card. Two highly rated, exciting fighters? Can't wait for that card!
Sucks their opponents are meh at best though.

Don't think Usyk will have any trouble with Hunter, who is too green imo and should've had a few more fights before being thrown in the deep end. Was hoping they'd get someone like Wlodarczyk or Cunningham for this fights. There are a lot of really good fighters at 200 lbs with a mixture of styles. I hope Usyk stays at 200 for a while to fight guys like Gassiev, Briedis, Lebedev and Dorticos.

I'm not going to pump up Hunter, he has had the easier fights leading up to this, but man was his Dad ever a blast to watch. Never will forget his fight with Avery Rawls, when Rawls was an 8-0 highly touted prospect. Hunter basically embarrassed Rawls for 8 rounds. And he was a badazz in his private life too.

Hats off to him then. I hope he can. If we have most of heavyweight, cruiserweight, light heavyweight and middleweight unified, this is a great thing for boxing.
