Kov couldn't even take Ward out after he dropped him. But now he's going to do it this time around ... sure.

Ward does have a tendency to charge in head first and clinch (ala Kessler). All the more reason Kovalev has to stay focused and either put him away or convincingly out score him.

Kovalev is one of those fighters who fights better angry. So long as he avoids fighting too ****** early, he'll likely put Ward in an early scorecard hole yet again.
Andre needs to extra careful here. I'm not sure there's a harder fighter to deal with over the first half of a fight than Kovalev.

and it was proven that ward initiated almost all the clinches. i did a ton of posts on it showing it. you are blaming kov for responing to wards clinching with the headlocks but why was he headlocking in the first place....is it because a cheater kept clicnhing him? is it because ward kept bendin below the waist(illegal) and popping up to clinch? is it because ward kept lowblowing in the clinch(illegal)
The person doing most of the holding and trying to catch his breath and trying to avoid fighting was Kovalev.
If I go low, get inside, then pop up and start moving my hands with punches, then I AM NOT initiating a clinch.
I am fighting inside, which is not a clinch and is perfectly legal.
That's what Ward was doing.
Except many times before he got too far, Kovalev grabbed him in a headlock.
He was even warned by the ref for doing it.
There was a fair amount of holding in the bout. Kovalev often put Ward in a headlock with his right arm. And Ward at times barreled into Kovalev, as if he had practiced tackling drills during training camp.

For all of Ward’s clean and efficient inside work during his fight with Kovalev, Lampley hardly ever called any of it, either choosing to remain silent or giving Kovalev credit for something, even though Kovalev frequently grabbed and held, even employing wrestling and MMA-style headlocks, during these moments. Yet Ward was the one criticized after the fight for being “dirty” and “clinching,” particularly by Kovalev’s promoter, Kathy Duva, who never acknowledged that her fighter was often the one initiating these clinches and Ward was, in fact, doing inside work, which of course is not remotely a foul in boxing.

(BTW, the article above is a very interesting read and highly recommended).
Kovalev headlock held so much I am very surprised points were not deducted for it.
I suspect Ward and Virgil will have that on their laundry of things to do a little better next time- alert the ref to the tactic early so Sergei will either have to fight inside or get points deducted, like he probably should have the first go round.
