Comments Thread For: Russell-Escandon Could Be Rescheduled for May 20 or May 27

NEW YORK Gary Russell Jr.'s year-long layoff likely will come to an end May 20 or May 27. Showtime executive Stephen Espinoza said that the Russell-Oscar Escandon featherweight title fight probably will be rescheduled for one of those two dates. Either way, it would air along with the re-broadcast of one of two fights Showtime already has committed to televising live from England on those dates.

What is going on with Russel's career? Why does this guy have so many long layoffs? Is his team to blame or is it Haymon's match making? There's got to be something going on with Russel Jr! This just doesn't make any sense. Did the lost to Loma scare Team Russel Jr from stepping up to take on tougher opposition? Loma was his first & only real test to date & it seems as if Russel Jr will go back to facing TBA's. His career is just as irrelevant as Adonis Stevenson!

Cruz, Frampton, Mares, etc. are all under the Haymon Banner so why isn't Russell Jr not facing any of those guys? I heard Russell is planning on retiring after a few more fights but it seems as if he already has one foot out the door with these long layoffs.

he has always been a big headed diva.... He talks about himself like he is already a legend... Just a few months ago he was saying he only has 3 fights left lol.... Weight issues have also been a problem in the past with him....

This guy got a $1 million for fight long Patrick Hyland didn't he?

No wonder he has zero appetite for boxing.

He would have fought Escandon already except that Escandon got injured so the fight was postponed.

Also, they were building towards a fight with Lee Selby at one point but Selby appears to have ducked him.

Russell tries too hard to be a businessman, he's thinking about retirement without having done much in boxing.
What frustrates me the most is the great natural talent of Russell, but he doesn't enjoy boxing, doesn't respect it and doesn't have respect for the father time with those long layoffs.
