Comments Thread For: 30 years later, Tim Ryan on Leonard-Hagler and the Golden Age

By Thomas Gerbasi - It may have been one of the few things Tim Ryan and Gil Clancy ever disagreed on, but unlike some fans and pundits over the years, the dynamic duo that was synonymous with televised boxing back in its last Golden Age didn't get too heated about the result of the 1987 bout between Sugar Ray Leonard and Marvin Hagler...

Oh man I remember them like it was yesterday. Those 2 covered so many fun fighters. Harry Arroyo, Terrance Ali, Robin Blake, Boza-Edwards etc etc. I remember when they covered Alexis Arguello's comeback fight against Bill Costello. Bill was shoe shining Arguello pretty bad. Alexis was rusty and a half step behind.

At one point Gil says: "I wonder how Billy will react when Arguello lands his big right hand."

Tim Ryan responded: "But does he still have the big punch is my question Gil"

Arguello lands a right hand bomb as soon as Ryan finished asking Gil that question and Gil yells: "There's your answer Tim, There's your answer!"

      Fun times

As fights are scored round by round.....you have to look at who won the most rounds...till this day leonaed won more rounds....rounds 1,2,3,4,6 ,10,11 are leonard rounds haglers was 5,7,8,9 and 12....but even if you look at round 9 leonard won the 1st 2 minutes of that round and hagler came on strong in the last minute.....the criteria of scoring a round Is
Clean punching - according to compu box.
Leonard landed 306 of 629 punches (49 percent), and Hagler connected on 291 of 792 (37 percent).
              Effective aggression
When hagler did manage to pin leonard on the ropes or corner he failed to make a a dent in leonard and at the end of the fight hagler was just as shattered as Leonard so hagler was aggressive but was it effective aggression
              Ring generalship.
It was hagler who lost the first 4 rounds by trying to box with leonard and leonard continually frustrated hagler by boxing and moving so hagler who boxed leonards fight.
Defence leonard continually made hagler miss and look slow.
From this day i have always felt leonard won the fight fair and square and if you score on the 10-8 sysytem leonard won this fight......i had it 7 rounds to leonard and 4 to hagler and that score has nevedr changed

I spoke to Hagler five years ago on this and he was still fuming couldn't believe 'they took it from him' .Who am I to argue ! I thought Hagler won pretty clearly( three rounds) although a little closer than what Marvin suggested.Thirty years ago I can still remember the buzz.

30% of that landed punches were feather soft flashy punchces that did no damage at all. Guess who went to hospital after fight.

Who went to hospital lol....wtf you talking about loony.your probably not even old enough to remember the fight, leonard was the naturely lighter fighter by 14lbs so of course its less power against the bigger fighter..hagler got outboxed and boxing is boxing not who can hit the hardest .....as i said if you score it round by round leonard won the fight...period....go play with your xbox and let the big boys talk about the biggest fight i can remember in my lifetime
