    Golovkin-Jacobs: The Forgotten Factor

So, regardless of who you consider to be the winner between Jacobs and Golovkin (personally, I saw Jacobs winning), then it can't be denied that Golovkin looked kinda off. Jacobs was clearly the best boxer that he ever fought, but Golovkin looked much more careful than usual and unable to push for the kill. Jacobs was even allowed to humiliate and taunt him with his hands down! Brook now mentions that he is the one who took something away from Golovkin during their fight and when looking back, Golovkin DID take some dangerous punishment from Brook. I still get the colds when I see the GIF in which Brook uppercuts him and gives him the jellylegs. It's unbelievable that Golovkin didn't collapse from that! Brook landed a lot of clean punches and I think that could have played a big part in Golovkin's decline as a fighter. What do the rest of you think?

Honestly, Jacob's relative success has nothing to do with Brook.

I think Abel didn't have very good gameplan coming into the fight. Gennady still found the way to win by outboxing Jacobs.

GG was never a great boxer, but he knew how to trap opponents and set up shots. Recently he seems to have fallen in love with his power and favours winging in big head punches. Presumably assuming that over 12 rounds he will eventually catch the other guy.

Hopefully this fight was a wake up call and he will realise that he needs to apply some science to his style once again.

It didnt hurt as well that Jacobs was so tall, and hit hard enough to gain GGG's respect, that Golovkin found it difficult to get close enough to land frequently. Jacobs would make a point to exchange with GG rather than shell up which didnt allow Golovkin to settle into the patterns he normally uses to unlock opponents

So you people don't think that the damage Brook did has affected him at all?

Nah. Brook landed some decent punches. But they were not affecting GG at all. He looked embarrassed to be in the ring with a WW imo.

Me personally - No I don't. Part of the whole reason for GGG getting hit so much vs Brook was that he was sure Brook couldn't hurt him enough to cause him serious trouble, so he just walked through him and walked him down with very little regard for defence. Not saying Brook isn't a very good fighter as he is, just a division or two south of MW.

If GGG has lost a step it's because he's now into his mid-thirties and not because brook landed a few shots on him. If anyone will suffer from that fight it's Brook, having a broken orbital bone & steel plate in your face is no joke, I hope he is the same as before for the Spence fight otherwise it could be a long night

No one is talking about Jacobs, declining, the last weight check in, so he could fight
with a 15-20lb weight advantage! I think some would call that cheating!

I actually agree with you. Jacobs hurt himself when he shelled up at times and allowed Golovkin to mount an offense. I still give Jacobs the nod because he did a lot of other good things but he needed to be more convincing.

exactly my opinion ^ thought ggg won the fight clearly but hes headhunting way too much and loading up on his shots. think all the 'mexican' style talk has got to him. compare his boxing to how it was in the amateurs, looks so much slower recently and not as light on his feet.

First of all Brook had absolutely no effect on Golovkin except for getting a few shots in. It's boxing after all isn't it? Bottom line is that Golovkin pounded Brook into submission. Nothing more to say about that fight. As far as Jacobs goes, Golovkin has a lot of respect for him and they both put on a good show for the fans. Golovkin is not the second coming of Christ. He's hittable and sometimes he gets hit. It doesn't detract from the fact that he convincingly beat Jacobs that night. Like it or not it is what it is and was what it was.
