Comments Thread For: Thurman No Longer Concerned With Pursuit of Mayweather

Earlier this month, WBC/WBA welterweight world champion Keith 'One Time' Thurman (28-0, 22 KOs) got the biggest win of his career when he secured a twelve round split decision over Danny Garcia to unify two world titles at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Thurman is now focused on unifying the welterweight division, with Kell Brook currently holding the IBF world title and Manny Pacquiao the holder of the WBO crown.

That ship has sailed with Mayweather. Beating the winner of Brook vs Spence would build his legacy and take him to the next level. He would be the number WW in the world and the man to beat.

When Floyd was fighting guys like Guerrero and Canelo in 2013 Thurman was fighting dudes like soto karass and jan zavec lol plus he fought Guerrero 2 years after Floyd did. The Floyd that fought Canelo would have boxed circles around this dude.

There are several good welterweights today. We fans will be damned lucky to see most of them fight each other at all. Forget Mayweather. Will we ever get to see Spence or Brook fight Thurman?

Fighting and beating a 40 year old Mayweather now is not going to earn you any status. People will say he got old, which he probably did. Nobody should be aspiring to fight Mayweather unless they're chasing money. No other reason.

Wasn't he mentioning Floyd a week or two ago? Whats changed from last week or whatever? And f#ck if this Floyd vs Conor thing happens I guarantee Thurman will be talking Floyd & probably Conor too in the future, & rightfully so if he's smart, so he needs to quit bsing.

The Floyd who fought Canelo was as close to flawless as it gets when it comes to nullifying a bigger, stronger, younger man. It was a clinic from the negotiating table to the final bell.

In a sport where you're career is over for most before you hit your mid 30's after a lifetime focusing only on boxing & you're lucky if you can make 6 digits or more per fight everyone should be chasing money.

I'd also argue when you fight names its not so much about the money for that specific fight as its enhancing your own earning power by defeating that name or even if you lose I think it helps you as a guy like Victor Ortiz could attest after getting entertainment opportunities he likely would have never gotten if he's name hadn't been connected to Floyd's name.
