Ward spent basically two years on the shelf, fighting for the freedom to handle his business the way he sees fit; he's unlikely to move off of that position for anyone.Ward and Hunter said Ward would win a rematch much easier than the first fight. I don't think they really believe that. If they did they wouldn't be stalling on making the rematch. Hell, if Ward can beat Kovalev so easily why doesn't he get back in that ring and do it and make some money. The sooner the better.
Roc Nation is doing their work; date penciled in with HBO for PPV, Mandalay Bay Event Center as the venue on hold (12k-seat building versus a 20k seater, with the placement in the casino better helping with the closed circuit coordination with MGM Resorts), and the terms being worked out to have Sergey Kovalev fight on a Roc Nation card (as opposed to the scenario for the first fight, where Ward was simply showing up for a Main Events show).
While the business is getting worked out, Andre Ward and Virgil Hunter are still in the gym, sharpening up the tools; with 85 days until the alleged HBO date on hold, Ward can still hold off until mid April before locking in for a hard 8-week camp (with Ward not really having too many issues with managing the weight).
Ward's been in the gym, allegedly, since January, being a professional fighter; if Kovalev is waiting on having a formally signed deal in hand before getting back to the business of being a pro fighter, he ****ed up.Comment

Because Roc Nation is running the rematch, and Main Events/Kathy Duva had been fighting that understanding for far too long (going to the press with nonsense about having finalized terms did nothing to spook Andre Ward or his camp).
Once she got that out of her system, with both fighters having gone on their holidays, Roc Nation Sports got back to the business of finalizing their event, Ward-Kovalev II. The deal with HBO for the PPV date was penciled in, the deal with MGM Resorts for the Mandaly Bay EC was penciled in, and now RNS is finalizing the financial package being offered to Sergey Kovalev and Main Events. With the main planks dealt with, Roc Nation is left to work through finalizing the last few deal points (sponsors, TV partners, closed circuit with MGM Resorts, press tour, media access, etc), before formally announcing the fight.
If things continue forward as they're supposed to, expect the announcement of the finalized fight and press tour by mid-April, with two full months to properly sell the rematch of a hotly contested fight (Cotto-Alvarez did $12.5m at Mandalay Bay EC; I don't expect Roc Nation to price tickets as aggressively as they did, but Kovalev-Ward already sold more tickets than seats in Mandalay Bay EC, and that was at $55-$1005 ticket price points, with most of the tickets sold within weeks of the fight announcement anyway)Comment

ward himsefl has been saying there are no ongoing negotiations and has crapped on teh fight. one guy says he wants the fight, the other doesn't. ward's either a liar, or he really does contemplate retirement when he doesn't get his way.
it's an awful look if you'r enot a fanboy. i'm not some kovalev fanboy. been a ward fan since way before kovaelv was even a blip on a radar. but i'm honest.
ward's a spoiled child in these negotiations.Comment
