    Bautista Scores Smashing KO

WBO Asia Pacific bantamweight champion Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista kept faith with his promise to **** and scored a smashing third round knockout victory over veteran Nicaraguan toughie Robert Bonilla at the famed Staples Center in Los Angeles . The scheduled ten round bout was one of the special attractions on the undercard of the WBC super featherweight title fight between Marco Antonio Barrera and Rocky Juarez and was shown "live" on pay-per-view on Dream TV in the Philippines. Boom Boom is the real deal! Believe that.

He looked very sharp and threw some vicious punches last night. He's only going to get better and better under Freddy Roach.

I'm a big fan of Boom Boom but I think it's still too early to tell if he's the real deal or not. I'm impressed with his punching power but I think he's still too sluggish at times and is very vulnerable of getting caught with huge shots. His defense is tight but when he starts throwing his bombs, he doesn't get back to defense mode quick enough to avoid the counters.

I'm not sure if the how much did the low blow affected Bonilla by getting stopped in that same round but nevertheless, I was somewhat impressed by last night's performance and I hope Bautista improves through the guidance of Freddie.

I think this kid is just as normal as any other young upcoming prospect. I'd even go far enough to say, he's no different than Joel Julio at the moment. Prospect wise, not weight division or even styles. Rey doesn't have the speed or southpaw stance in his favor as his compatriots all seem to. Though he has decent defense that can still be fine tuned and definitely has power. His footwork isn't all that bad either. Still too early to tell. My last memory of him was him getting knocked down after leaving himself open and then just trying to make it out of the round alive. He's still too green though GBP should carry him along fine.
