It doesn't matter how much force there was, did the opponent do or even try to do anything to stop it? If not, that's Effective Aggression AND Ring Generalship: your jab controlled the situation, no matter how hard it landed.

The professionals fights are about damage. A jab can set you up to do some real damage but a jab is the weakest shot in boxing. I know, but Foreman..... Technically, you could win a fight with just a jab, if you were able to display spectacular defense and movement along with it.

To be fair, Dempsey outlines the difference between a jab and jolt in his book. Today, I never ever hear anyone call any straight lead a jolt or anything else.

A jab uses less gravity, from memory anyway, I'm not a boxer, but the point is the purpose of a jolt is to KO. It is a KO punch explained by a p4p atg KO master.

make of that what you will but in a world where all straight leads are called jabs and jabs are not considered power punches there most certainly is power punch left out of the equation.

Pretty sure you can see jolts, or jabs that use a trigger or falling step, but no will call it a jolt.

Jabs can and can't be effective. Far too many variables for you to expect some blanket truth that they work or they don't. Those quotes only mean something in the context of each individual fight.

Boxing isnt black and white.. paulie could jab his way through a fight and take a beating. Guys like ward/floyd/cotto could hurt people with their jab to the head or body (cotto and floyd have both dropped people with jabs). Maidana mostly used it as a way to get on the inside.

In one fight you could see a guy use a strong jab sparse jab to keep someone off him and mess with their timing.. in a different fight you could see a guy "pity pat" as some have put it as more of a range finder to set up their offense. Some pressure fighters mask their pressure with a jab to cut off the ring or move forward.

That's why boxing is such a great sport. A punch by one fighter doesnt guarantee the same success as a completely different fighter throwing the same punch. Each fight is takes on it's own feel. Landing a ton of jabs or a lack there of doesnt necessarily mean you're controlling the fight or not
