Comments Thread For: Fazliddin Gaibnazarov Inks Pact With Top Rank

LAS VEGAS, NEV. Top Rank(r) announced today the signing of 2016 Olympic light welterweight gold medalist FAZLIDDIN "Fayzi" GAIBNAZAROV to an exclusive long-term promotional agreement. Gaibnazarov, shrugging off significant height and reach disadvantages, stunned skillful Cuban-born opponent Lorenzo Sotomayor to pull off the upset, winning the gold via split decision.

Another Olympian to Top Rank and another fighter who 90% of fans will never even be able to spell his name.

I'm a bit surprised at this. Gaibnazarov is not a very marketable fighter at all. He arguably lost three times on course to his gold medal win in Rio, iirc

I was going to the opposite. With this guy, everyone will just call him Faz. Easy. Much better than Gvozdyk or something like that.

Melikuziev is the Uzbek fighter TR should've signed, that boy is a serious talent. Gaibnazarov was one of the weaker fighters on the Uzbek team and was very fortunate to win gold.

These are the type of fighters HBO wants so Bob has to sign them. They aren't interested in his Mexican fighters or Pacquiao anymore

                    It makes sense.

He's with Klimas, who has a number of boxers that are with Top Rank.

Reading the release, it sounds like Top Rank is going to put some boxing events in Uzbekistan...

Uzbekistan is a country where boxing is the number one sport. Unfortunately for many years it was concentrated in amateur boxing, but the times are changing and now, together with "Fayzi" and Top Rank, we will be able to bring more professional boxing to Uzbekistan. I would like to thank Top Rank for giving an opportunity to this young, talented man and I looking forward to see him in ring making his pro debut in the near future.”
This follows something that Top Rank has been doing in recent years, which is signing international Olympians, and then staging/televising those fights internationally...which opens up markets to them and lessens their reliance on US money.
