Ah, but see? Anthony Joshua did beat a titleholder and that can be repeated over and over like he beat a real champion. I like Joshua and take nothing away from him but a guy like martin has no business ever holding a belt- even an alphabet one. Yet, in this day and time...Comment

Isn't this the whole point of the lineal champion? It's certainly not perfect but in Golovkin's case, if his first title shot was against Martinez, in one fight he would have been considered "the" middleweight championComment

I wish it had gone down that way, but look at it. The sport itself is asking us true fans to look up and try to figure out who the lineal champion is. It should be obvious to us and the casuals who the champion is. When your entertainment puts you to work, something is seriously wrong with that.Comment

kinda hard to compare yes - but to be fair to todays fighters - the international amateur pedigree that many of todays fighters have is also something that needs to be acknowleged - people like Lomanchenko and GGG have been facing a lot of tough fighters from all over the world in a globally scene that didint exist in days gone by. They racked up tons of impressive wins before ever turning pro.Comment

I watched the Thurman/Garcia fight in a hotel bar with assorted sports fans, not boxing fans, and had to remind someone about multiple belts and champions, and he rolled his eyes and said oh yeah, right. Like, "I remember why boxing sucks."I wish it had gone down that way, but look at it. The sport itself is asking us true fans to look up and try to figure out who the lineal champion is. It should be obvious to us and the casuals who the champion is. When your entertainment puts you to work, something is seriously wrong with that.
Most Americans (and maybe everyone else too, I don't know) want to find out who the best is in their sport. Best in their weight division. This makes sense in all sports -- except today's boxing. You get to see a real championship, a definite winner. Except in boxing.Comment
