Comments Thread For: Arum: If Chavez Jr. is Serious, He Has Good Shot To Beat Canelo

Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum is giving Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. a good chance to beat Saul "Canelo" Alvarez - if Chavez Jr. is serious about his training. Canelo (48-1-1, 34KOs) and Chavez Jr. (50-2-1, 32 KOs) will collide on May 6th at a sold out T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. There is a catch-weight in place of 164.5-pounds.

I would always take a good BIG boxer over a small one almost anyday...Chavez is HUGE compared to 5'7" Canelo.

Well yeah - a good big Boxer over an equally good smaller one, sure... but that's the question isn't it? It's generally recognised that Canelo is the the better boxer, but is he superior enough to overcome the size difference - that's the only intrigue here. P4P Canelo's the better fighter, hands down, but I suspect he's going to be giving up as much as 10Lbs in the ring. Is that enough to overcome the skill difference? Myself I don't think it is... Canelo UD.

If Chavez Jr. is in top physical condition the night of the fight, the size difference should make things difficult to Canelo. Chavez also has a great chin. It should be an interesting fight, but I still think Jr. will find a way to screw things up. When Canelo begins to unload on him, I can see Chavez whining and complaining to the referee. He has won a lot of fights, but he is not a winner.

Chavez Jr looked quite trim and slim in the photos at the beginning of his training, so I'm worried what will be left of him with another 18 pounds to cut. Hope he's not too weight drained and weakened in May if he does make the weight limit. All this has to be taken into account before even thinking about the game plan/ s.
