How is this even a question?

Marquez has by far the better wins. Is one of the best counter punchers ever. Never got took to school by an Austin Trout level of fighter. Hell you could argue that Marquez only lost 2 or maybe 3 fights. The only thing Cotto has on Marquez is he did better against Floyd.

I love Miguel, but the answer here is JMM.

Big fan of both, but it's Marquez. His counter punching and combinations were a thing of beauty.

Take away Pac and there's not much there for the Marquez resume. It's Cotto and if they fought, it's still Cotto.
margarito and martinez?! really??? shot Margarito with the messed up eye coming off a demolition job by mosley and losing every round to pacquiao. and 1 legged martinez coming up to 40? They are considered top wins are they?

2 of my all time favorite fighters. I love Marquezs work ethic and toughness but I love Cottos fundementals of boxing. I actually watch Cotto tapes for training tips.

Personally I wouldve loved to see these 2 scrap it out at 147 not now though because Marquez is over the hill. If I were to choose itd be Marquez but I am a bias Messican so who knows.

Given JMMs obvious use of PEDs in recent fights, and the fact that if they both fought Cotto would be the favorite, I would go with Cotto.

Marquez is a great counter-puncher, but he gets hit a lot easier than Cotto does. Cotto is better at ducking and slipping punches and has better footwork. Cotto has a better body attack. Marquez was on his way to being finished by Pacquiao in one or two more rounds before he landed the right counter that Pac carelessly walked into. One that Pac has taken on the chin in previous fights without Marquez on 'roids. Since Pac has insisted on VADA testing for any potential rematch, JMM has lost total interest, even for $100M as he stated.

If Cotto and JMM fight, Miguel would be wise to insist on VADA testing.

Cotto got the **** beat out of him by slow crude Margarito. A top level guy doesn't lose to Margarito. Cotto also got a controversial win over Clottey.
Exactly. He never got that big win that indicated greatness. He just wasn't on that next level IMO. He'll get in the HOF and all, but it's hard to look back on all his fights and be that impressed.

JMM had better career,..I rate him higher..but if they had ever fought especially in their primes... Cotto would beat JMM.

Young Cotto is too big/strong for JMM. Pac, on the other hand, beats Cotto anytime. Just saying... it's all about styles.
