Comments Thread For: DiBella: Wilder Ratings Show Boxing Can Hold Its Own on Free TV

Promoter Lou DiBella is beyond pleased with the ratings Deontay Wilder's win produced Saturday night on broadcast television. According to final numbers released by FOX, Nielsen Media Research indicated viewership for Wilder's fifth-round technical knockout of Gerald Washington peaked at 2.57 million. That amount of viewers tuned in between 10 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. (ET), when Wilder floored Washington with a right hand and the unbeaten WBC heavyweight champion eventually stopped the former USC football player at Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama.

If they keep throwing together good, competitive cards like this one things will only get better ratings-wise.

Randomly Breazeale is becoming much watch TV. Guy is probably my favorite HW to watch these days for pure entertainment. He wasn't really there for the Joshua fight or just couldn't compete, but the more evenly matched up fights he's been in have been fun watches.

I hope so.. cos it sure as **** aint been holdin its own on Pay TV and subscription channels.

Some of the Numbers coming out of the states for the fights have been downright diabolical.

They should be free, either way if they are on subscription channels or PPV people are going to stream them anyways. Make them free like Basketball, football, soccer and add comercials. Cable should also be free because they still have commercials.

If Wilder would actually challenge himself and choose to fight a legit top HW for his numerous VOLUNTARY title defenses... The ratings would even b better. In terms of recent American HW champs - Bowe, Holyfield, Tyson... Wilder is insignificant in comparison hr in the States.

                    LOL

I think that it got very good ratings because of the good fights that were part of the card. Folks on social media got word of the Breazeale KO win and then more tuned in to see that Hurd-Harrison fight, which ended in another KO. Washington's good start kept people watching.
