When people talk about Hopkins nobody brings up that record. They bring up his fights, his time in prison and how he changed himself, and his longevity in the sport. Nobody talks about that record but GGG fans and Abel Sanchez. Who did Hopkins fight when he set the record?

I mean Sure it's not on the top of the list for Bhopal but that just goes to show you how much he accomplished. That record is pretty significant to me because it showed that Bhop dominated his division for years

I agree, the defense record is kind of pointless, you can't compare Hopkins' record to Monzon's streak of 14 successful defenses back when he was the one and only middleweight champion. Defending a secondary belt is even less impressive.

This era seems to punish the top fighters more as they don't get the recognition as being the best as usually 1-3 other guys have a shiny belt that looks just as good on their shoulders. That doesn't mean that we can give a guy as much credit for 17 defenses against largely mediocre opponents.

I think the defense streak is just something that K2 use to drum up interest in their fighter.

Yup he didn't hold the real belt so why people add those defenses of the "Jr version" of the WBA belt just cheapens the record. If you count when he actually was awarded the real WBA belt he is way off the record.
