    Welter..........but why?

I was just wondering if anyone knows exactly why it is called the Welterweight division?I looked up the word Welter and it has a few meanings none of which sound boxing related and then of course it says a division in boxing between LW and MW.I just wondered if there was a reason for the name and if anyone knew why..........

according to websters on-line, a welter is "a chaotic mass or jumble"...

which sounds a bit like tha hatton-collazo fight..

also a "welt" can mean "to hit hard"
