  • Comments Thread For: Callum Smith vs. Anthony Dirrell May Land on May Date in Anfield

The mandatory world title battle between Callum Smith and Anthony Dirrell (30-1-1, 24 KOs) could take place on a May date in Anfield, according to Smith's promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport. The two boxers will collide for the vacant World Boxing Council [WBC] super middleweight world title.

May is good news, Smith has had to wait long enough. I don't see Haymon beating Hearn at the purse if he has Anfield in mind. Nice pay day for Dirrell he shouldn't have any concerns travelling its not a fight he's winning regardless of wherever it is staged.

Anthony Dirrell has every chance of exposing Callum Smith and knocking him out brutally. To do it at Anfield in front of a large gathering of Kopites would just make it funnier.

This is a good fight either way. I think there are too many people expecting lop-sided victories here. Anthony is no slouch and Callum looks like he has some serious tools. I'm glad to see 168 ramping back up...

Anthony Dirrell is a solid fighter. If Smith can beat him then he will have at least gone through one tough fight to get his belt.

As for Dirrell not wanting to go to the UK I can't blame him given how his brother was robbed against Froch.

But if they are willing to throw a lot of cash his way then it's worth the risk. The fight should be held where both boxers can make the most money.

Be interesting to see how the purse bids go tbf.

Most indications are that Haymon isnt throwing money around like he used to, Smith is semi popular in the UK but not a big name by any stretch.

Fight wise i think its a very interesting match up. Smith starts very fast, and many times he has gotten his opponents out of there before his opponent has really gotten themselves into the fight. But after the first 3 or so rounds he runs out of ideas a bit.

Im kinda glad that Smith isnt getting in with Jack or Degale next because imo he isnt ready for that. Anthony Dirrell is perfect.

Haymon and Hearn seem to have difficult time making deals. Spence/Brook is going to the limit as well.

                Theyve done business before though?

                Brook vs Porter
                Mcdonnell vs Kameda x2
                Joshua vs Brezeale
                Joshua vs Martin
                Rose vs Andrade
Degale vs Dirrell (that was pre Degale getting with Haymon iirc)

off the top of my head

Spence vs Brook is just a difficult fight to make in general. Khan is being a knobend, Brook is on the verge of moving up, and probably would rather not face another power puncher after GGG.

I dont see any major problems making this. I think Hearn probably bids more than Haymon, and Dirrell isnt a big draw in the US so will probably welcome the mini payday+vacant title shot.
