Round 110-9 Calzaghe
Both look tense but Calzaghe’s superior boxing wins him the round clearly. Reid did land some decent right hands towards the end of the round which got Joe’s attention. Reid was very dirty in this round. 10-9 Calzaghe after one.
Round 210-9 Calzaghe
More of the same. Clear Calzaghe round, Reid still fouling incessantly. Reid landed his best punch of the fight, a right hand, but didn’t do anything else. 20-18 Calzaghe.
Round 310-9 Calzaghe
Another Calzaghe round, albeit closer than the first two. Both stepping it up but Joe clearly the superior boxer. Signs however that he’s underestimating Reid, showboating etc. Reid still fouling… 30-27 Calzaghe.
Round 410-9 Calzaghe
Another Calzaghe round… Reid’s punches look meaty but he’s swinging a bit wildly, Joe has that signature fluid boxing style landing and getting out of range impressively. Reid has such a dirty, roughhouse style and showing signs of frustration. 40-36 Calzaghe.
Round 510-9 Reid
Reid finally stops trying to counter and has began to rush in and initiate exchanges. Much more effective tactics. Still being a dirty bastard. Calzaghe didn’t really have an answer to the change in tactics. Reid clearly the physically stronger of the two. 49-46 Calzaghe.
Round 610-9 Reid
Another Reid round. Calzaghe’s no longer looking so ****y. Joe has responded to Reid’s new tactics, moving a lot more and not hanging about. A very close round but just feel Reid’s work was more effective. 58-56 Calzaghe at the halfway point.
Round 710-9 Calzaghe
Joe takes this round. Reid took the first half of this round off, with Calzaghe happy to just pick him off from range. Reid has landed about 30 punches on Joe’s hips/thighs at this point. Also constantly going in with the head. Ref not dealing with the infringements at all. 68-65 Calzaghe.
Round 810-8 Calzaghe
Another Calzaghe round. Reid showing signs of tiredness now. Calzaghe being allowed to box at range and Reid back to slow clubbing counters and charging into clinches. Reid landing better with his head than anything else. Ref finally takes a point. 78-73 Calzaghe.
Round 910-9 Reid
A close round but I give it to Reid. Joe starting the round showboating, looking like he lost concentration. Reid picking up the pace after a few cumbersome rounds from him. Reid landed a great right hand which snapped Calzaghe’s head back. Joe showing a solid chin. 87-83 Calzaghe. Reid needs a big finish.
Round 1010-9 Calzaghe
Joe takes this round. Containing Reid well while getting his own punches off. Reid gets too eager and ends up missing with wild swings, although he does land the odd right. Reid looking bust up now, both looking tired. 97-92 Calzaghe. Reid needing a knockout or a really big finish now...
Round 1110-9 Reid
A very close round, couldn’t really split them but I don’t want to score any even rounds. Reid really trying to force the issue and initiate the exhanges. Joe doing his best to fight fire with fire though and they are finally going toe to toe. Best round of the fight with both landing bombs. 106-102 Calzaghe with a round to go.
Round 1210-9 Calzaghe
Calzaghe takes the final round. Competitive round but I was impressed by Joe sucking it up and outboxing Reid on the front foot. Reid’s right hand has landed repeatedly like a forearm smash to the side/back of Calzaghe’s neck. Sounds meaty but it isn’t a scoring punch. 116-111 for Calzaghe.
Overall Thoughts
Joe Calzaghe was a clear and deserved winner. God knows what fight that judge was watching scoring 116-111 for Robin Reid. Reid was lucky not to be disqualified. Joe did talk up the big finish before the fight and he did massively underestimate Reid’s durability, strength and toughness. Reid didn’t look hurt once and his punches were menacing, but he just got outboxed by a superior technicial.
Calzaghe won this fight. I have scored it a few times, classic case of everyone being influenced by the commentary. Also Calzaghe has a lot of haters, who use this as an opportunity to tear him down.
He fought like ****, won the fight in a not very impressive fashion, Calzaghe was one of those guys that was pretty inconsistent with his performances, and could sometimes fight down to his competition.
