Spence is left handed so he doesn't even throw a left hook~

His right hook is pretty good though especially to the body, which is rare for a lefty, his right jab is also go and so is his straight left which makes his right hook even more effective. Lacy never had the other tools to make his left hook work more universally. Just a lead hand hook is easy to deal with, circle away and use jabs and straights because they will never allow a left hooker to really be able to set and use that punch.

Spence is not a pure hooker he has a lot of offensive tools, Lacy was however a pure left hook guy which was pretty but a shame he didn't have the ability to do more to set it up.

In fact lacy was a favourite against calzaghe, whereas spence in the prospective bookies odds is the underdog against brook.

I remember 'the new mike tyson' was the phrase with lacy, as he was blasting out these durable fighters, in better fashion than others had beat them (sound familiar?). People couldnt see how fighters would be able to cope when lacy started stringing his combos together. Boy did they get a rude awakening...

The lesson here, is that you shouldnt hype these offensive fighters, however good they look destroying B/C level opposition. Youve got to see how they do against an intelligent fighter who can fight back and wont stand in front of them.

I think people are really getting carried away with him demolishing algieri, someone who literally had no power whatsoever to stop spence in his tracks when hes coming forward. And bundu was an old man who lost every round to thurman, really is bizarre how beating them two has got this guy hyped so much.

Spence could well turn out to be the real deal but i think the hype machine needs to slow down a bit... People seem absolutely certain he'd blitz proven world level fighters, apparantly bradleys scared of him too now i was reading earlier today, and saw someones sig saying hes the heir to ray leonard, floyd mayweather etc lol, steady on guys...
Not really; Jeff Lacy was a one-handed, largely one punch fighter who never evolved much beyond that.

Errol Spence Jr is a fundamentally sound fighter, can box/brawl, can fight going both ways, commits hard to throwing damaging body shots, doesn't leave much open, has good pop, and is southpaw.

The US barely new who Joe Calzhaghe was, with opinions following with that.

lol okay i must have been imagining things when lacy was getting the hype. Its funny, you are all saiying, oh lacy was limited etc, my whole point was that people werent saying that before he lost. He didnt look too limited smashing up reid etc, same way as spence doesnt look too limited smashing up people like bundu

I didnt watch boxing when lacy was around, so I dont know how big the hype was for him. Only saw his fight against calzaghe, where he was getting abused.

So I thought he would have looked great before the calzaghe fight to deserve the hype surrounding him, but in the vanderpool fight he was really flat footed, couldnt cut off the ring, was hurt to the body in the first and lost a couple of rounds.

In the Sheika fight he looked lost at times, if you keep him busy from a distance he just follows you around. Even in the sheika fight he was stunned from an overhand right.

Havent seen the Reid, Pemberton and Williams fight yet, but cant see how experts thought he was the next big thing?

Before the Calzaghe fight, I saw credible sports "journalists" talking about Lacy as the superm iddle Mike Tyson, and how he would destroy Calzaghe etc etc etc. As a teenager I believed it and when Joey Caz beat him...scratch that, humiliated him, I just could not believe it.

It's also important to mention that the excuses started flying about throughout forums and certain sections of the boxing media much after the fight, specifically when Calzaghe went to the US and thumped Jones and beat Hopkins. All of a sudden, every possible excuse was made to degrade Calzaghe.
That was one of the most satisfying butt whoopins I've ever seen. Calzaghe became a hero to me the night he whooped Lacy.
