Is there less big fights happening in Vegas these days?

It seems like more often than not that big boxing fights are happening more often outside of Vegas. All the big names in boxing are picking venues outside of Vegas more often. To me, I think NYC is replacing Vegas as the new capital of big boxing fights.

Like Thurman/Garcia is gonna be held in NYC
    Jack/DeGale was in NYC
    GGG/Jacobs in NYC
    Joshua/Klitschko in the UK
    Canelo/Chavez might be in Texas
    Cotto/Kirkland in Texas

It feels like there are less big fights anywhere these days.

To me I feel like its more about there not really being any fights that feel all that big these days with Floyd gone, Manny almost gone, Canelo fighting bs guys (he had better opponents when he was competing with Cotto for that #3 spot then now when he's #1 or fighting for that #1 spot with Manny still) & Cotto hardly fighting at all & fighting bs guys when he does fight like half the time. Those guys were the big 4 for the last few years & Manny & Floyd were the top two for a long ass time. We are in a transitional period with star power so even the important fights don't feel as big in comparison to when we had. Between Floyd, Manny & Canelo you could count on a solid 3-5 big Vegas cards per year.

MSG was under renovation and the Barclays want to put themselves as a marquee location. Now you will have both MSG and the Barclays in the mix for big fights

I always thought it was a tacky place to stage the big fights anyway.

I can't stand the place! Promoters need to use more imagination, and make more use of the more historic and inspiring venues throughout the world.

It's not even about the size of a arena, its about destination and culture.

It may be the ******** mecca of the world but all the venues are too small. What's the maximum capacity of the biggest arena there? 20 k?

                Context is key

Saul Alvarez vs Amir Khan did $7.5m at the gate, with Kovalev-Ward having done almost $3.5m for their gate at T-Mobile Arena. Las Vegas is still the place where the revenues can be best capitalized (the main reason why Floyd never left Las Vegas, beyond his loyalty to MGM Resorts, is that Floyd was basically clearing $20m-$25m on the live event [between the gate and the closed circuit in Las Vegas]), but there are very few fights that command astronomical revenue at this point.

Saul Alvarez vs Liam Smith at AT&T Stadium was able to sell $5m worth in tickets; the site fee to host the event, paid by Jerry Jones, was likely significantly more than that.

Without Floyd being in the picture, you're left in a spot where you've got a handful of top venues that can basically deliver the same money on the event; Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Bell Centre in Montreal, O2 Arena in London, MGM Grand/T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, possibly Staples Center in LA, Madison Square Garden, and AT&T Stadium in Arlington all have the potential to deliver the same type of money, for the current biggest fights in the sport (Joshua-Klitschko going to Wembley Stadium being the only fight beyond that regular level at the moment).

Just like the general boxing world, Las Vegas is also waiting to see the establishment of that next superstar and those next mega-fights.

Wilder(c) vs Joshua(c) to unify the heavyweight title. is the type of showdown that is going to end up in Las Vegas, as will the possible Alvarez vs Golovkin fight (Thurman/Garcia winner vs Brook/Spence/Khan winner for the WBC/WBA/IBF 147lb titles will likely end up in Las Vegas).

Beyond that, as is the case with most rotations, the coming undisputed heavyweight champion is likely going to end up drawing the type of money to mandate at least a partial residency in Las Vegas (with Wilder and Joshua both likely ending up with annual fights in Las Vegas).

Once you break beyond that $10m Las Vegas gate (supplemented by the closed circuit revenues), it no longer becomes economically feasible to stage the fight anywhere else.

                  Money talks.

Mayweather-Berto, regardless of what anyone had to say about the actual fight, still ended up doing $10m in revenue at the live gate (with how much more coming from the closed circuit).

Outside of AT&T Stadium, Wembley, and maybe a German soccer stadium, you couldn't get that type of money for the best fight out there.
