It was widely believed that 2017 would be Manny Pacquiao's last year as a professional boxer. The Filipino superstar began his career in 1995 and became an international icon as he racked up a record of 59-6-2 (38 KO's), winning titles in eight divisions.

Of course it will if he continues to cherry-pick and fight b-type guys and not the elite of the division...

        November 20, 2013:

One of the oldest sayings in boxing, the first warning every aspiring fighter hears long before they've ever entered a ring, is that the most dangerous punch, the one to fear most, is the one you never see coming. While the cliché is certainly true at the start of a career, it rarely holds up toward the end. This is because almost none of the great fighters in history ever stopped after that punch — and the history of the sport suggests that few can ever escape it. Pacquiao, despite earning a reported $174 million since 2009 from boxing and endorsements deals, is no different.

Why? Because, of course, boxing's not so well kept dirty secret is that, financially, most fighters can never stop. No matter how outlandish a fortune they've earned inside the ring and out, most greats not only never get ahead, few can even manage getting out from under. They never put much distance between themselves and where they came from. With few exceptions, they all end up desperately needing one more payday. And then another. And then another. Most are forced to hang around so long their endings are consummated by the uglier, more sinister punch that they all saw coming a mile away. Joe Louis, at 37 years old, was never blindsided by the physical punches that Rocky Marciano landed to knock him helplessly out of the ring and the sport. No, the punch he never saw coming and what set him up for Marciano's right hand was debt — in his case, to the government. Louis owed the IRS $500,000 and had nowhere else to go and get it but back into the ring.

Nearly all the greats were forced to stick around for those last final beatings, the ones that did lasting damage to their souls as much as their brains. If "protect yourself at all times" is boxing's most vital rule to obey, surely the most devastating blow in the sport is the one you do see coming, the one you're simply helpless to escape its impact.

Oh Bob. If Manny fights beyond 2017, he should get all the profits from every one of his fights. If Bob is really suggesting it because it will be "fun" to travel the globe and help Manny's political ambitions, then he should prove it by guaranteeing all the profits from the fights go to Manny. That way there would be no conflict of interest and no one could suspect Bob of sacrificing Manny's health for profit.

As for Manny's career in the ring, I would be interested to see him fight longer, but only if he can still be the same Manny Pacquiao in the ring and still fight the best. And I think in order to still be the same Manny Pacquiao in the ring, Pacquiao needs the most advanced strength and conditioning, or he needs to move down to 140, maybe both. And the best strength and conditioning Manny ever got seemed to be with Alex Ariza. So for me to still really be interested in Manny's career, I'd like to see him rehire Alex Ariza. I know people suspected Ariza of dealing in PEDs, but Floyd eventually hired him so that must mean Ariza is clean after all, because Floyd would never, ever, you know!!! So as far as I am concerned Ariza has been cleared of all su****ions 100% now that TBE vouched for him.

Then the Floyd rematch would be more interesting to me. Or then a move to 140 could really be something special late in his career. Manny back closer to his physical prime, with elite strength and conditioning, against smaller opponents than we've been seeing him fight, could result in him going on a knockout streak again against top guys at 140 and dominating the division. Seeing him beat Crawford or Mikey Garcia at this age would be special. However, I only see it if Pacquiao rehires Ariza or someone like that. The strength and conditioning he got for Vargas and Bradley was awful and resulted in him only throwing 400-500 punches, which made the fights very boring and un-Pacquiao like.

If Pacquiao can return to throwing lots of combinations, and 800 hard punches per fight, then I'd definitely keep watching his fights with huge interest. But if he's so past his prime that he can only throw 400 punches against a guy like Vargas, I can't consider him a P4P contender anymore and my interest is lessened.
