Comments Thread For: Golovkin vs. Jacobs: Ryan Martin Eyed For The Undercard

On December 16th from the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California, promising lightweight, Ryan 'Blue Chip' Martin halted Yardley Suarez in four rounds to improve to 17-0 (10 KO's). In 2016, Martin notched four victories and got his career back on track after being bogged down by the problems of SMS Promotions the year before.

Could be good for an HBO freeview before the P4P. As for the PPV telecast, 1. I've never heard of this dude, and 2. if they round out the undercard with him, depending on his and Usyk's opponent, Loeffler may be making the same mistake as last time in not putting a single name Mexican fighter on the PPV.

If they're smart they will open the card with Usyk, then do Cuadras-Estrada or Inoue-Estrada, then do Chocolatito, then GGG-Jacobs. That one additional fight will change hardcore boxing fans attitudes from murmuring to themselves "this is a good card" to running through the streets shouting "omg everyone you have to see this."

It is the latter reaction which creates the hype bubble so big that it breaks through to casual fans, and ups the PPV sales. Not to mention having a big Mexican fight on the card is what is going to convince 50k to 100k Mexicans on the fence to actually buy the card. Of course that's just a guess but there's no denying the correlation between Mexicans on PPVs and PPV sales.

Hell let's lowball expectations. Let's say having a Mexican on the card only adds 35k buys, and having a huge lower division matchup only adds 30k. That's still an extra 65k buys. At 70 bucks a pop, that's 4 million 550 thousand. Half goes to the satellite and cable cos, meaning you have 2 mil 252 thousand left. Cuadras-Estrada or Estrada-Inoue or Cuadras-Inoue would cost about 1.5 mil max, so you'd make a profit of 750k, and you'd get better PPV buys to help in Canelo negotiations, and the fans would get maybe the best fight on the card. Win win win! So why not? According to my calculations Cuadras-Inoue would not even need to add 50k to the card to not lose money. And even if Loeffler did lose a few hundred K on this fight, any extra PPVs, even if they just add 10k, help with Canelo negotiations which earns that money back later.

So I really do hope we see Estrada, Inoue, or Cuadras face each other on this card. Or on HBO free the week before or after.
