They should respect his right to follow his own religious beliefs. There are some violent Muslims as there are violent people of all religions. I don't think it's a religion that condones violence but it does preach kindness and respect for your fellow man.

Let me guess you got your knowledge from actual reading and not the internet?? Taking verses in context?? Getting the Verse like:

"And kill them wherever you overtake them and expel them from wherever they have expelled you, and fitnah is worse than killing. And do not fight them at al-Masjid al- Haram until they fight you there. But if they fight you, then kill them. Such is the recompense of the disbelievers." Quran 2:191

But you lack the context of it because the verse before says:
"Fight in the way of Allah those who fight you but do not transgress. Indeed. Allah does not like transgressors." Quran 2:190

And the next two verses after says:
"And if they cease, then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. Fight them until there is no [more] fitnah and [until] worship is [acknowledged to be] for Allah . But if they cease, then there is to be no aggression except against the oppressors." Quran 2:192-193

So if you have the entire issue in context you will see that war is condoned in the case of oppression and subjugation and retaliation, not as a generalization.

Also key words here are Fitnah which means Trials, tribulation, distress.
