I don't even think he's close with the Charlo brothers as people make it out to be. What would they talk about? He doesn't even speak english. I suspect the brothers even resent this Lara guy because he gets to fight cab drivers for $1M each stretching 2 years.

Very bad style match-up. I'd much rather Jermall Charlo vs Lara. That is the best fight at 154 between the Showtime guys. Jermall vs Andrade and Lara Andade are the next best ones.
I'd rather see Jermell matched against offensive guys. The least defensive guy Jermell should be in with is like an Andrade. That could still work on a good night. Jermell vs Lara on the other hand is likely to be wasted budget for Showtime in terms of entertainment.
PBC has been so used to not matching the best vs the best, that now they think matching best vs best alone is everything. No, it's a big positive step, but matching the best vs the best with the RIGHT MATCHUPS where each guy faces someone WITH THEIR OWN ADVANTAGES and where if there's a defensive guy, there is also an offensive guy with enough ability to CREATE EXCHANGES and more than just movement, potshots, and holding which after a few rounds becomes like watching the same episode of a sitcom 20 times over. It's repetitive and boring.
So right now Haymon has a bunch of guys at 154 he could match. Maybe he thinks just matching them up, for a change, is enough to bring back fans, but making the best matchups out of those guys is just as important.
So Jermall-Lara. Or maybe Tony Harrison-Lara. Harrison is maybe chinny, but Lara isn't a big puncher. Lara is fast and hard to catch, but Harrison is long and fast and can definitely catch guys. How do you get Lara in a fan friendly action fight? By having an opponent fast enough to hit him a lot and strong enough not to get knocked out by the first clean counter Lara lands. That matchup would tick all those boxes.
That's how you have to think. You have to predict how the styles will mesh and then come up with the matchups that would be most even in terms of roe-sham-boe mix and matches of styles. You want fights where fix boxes have check marks for one guy, and five have check marks for the other.
You also want to have the next matchup already being promoted during the first. You put the next guys from the same weight class on the undercard. So for example the right way to do a card would be JERMALL Charlo vs. Andrade main event, then Lara-Harrison on the undercard, and winners fight. Jermell can rematch Jackson or fight Lubin or Hurd, and then fight the other guys.
That's how you have to do it. Best vs best is great but when you have choices like this, you need to pair best vs. best with the best best vs. best options also. Lara vs Jermell is probably the WORST match-up you can make for either Lara or Jermell out of the top Haymon Jr. Welters, or which Lara qualifies as much more than Jermell anyway (one of the problems but easily looked over if Jermell were to fight someone who could actually push the action with him instead).
So why make the worst matchup of the best guys?

Anything interesting at 154 would be greatly appreciated. Lara and the Charlos refusing to fight each other and Canelo refusing to fight any legitimate threat was really killing the division.
Jermall moving up to 160, and Lara/Jermell unifying is good. Demetrius Andrade fighting winner would be amazing, so probably impossible. I haven't heard anything about Canelo vacating his belt, despite fighting at 165 next, so I guess that belt is trapped.
