Chavez Jr. camp / sparring partners needed / coach

I think they should get Curtis Stevens in camp. Also I think Mosley should help assist in footwork and defense.

For reals? Stevens looked like dried up dog turds in his last fight and Mosley's footwork is gone (did you see the Mayorga "fight"?).

I think Roach would know who to bring in for Jr. People criticize Freddy but he got an old-ass Cotto in good enough shape and form that he was able to go 12 competitive rds with Canelo. Yea, it was a loss but a moral victory none the less as this is the same Cotto who got clowned by Trout a couple years before. Roach has studied Canelo and he will know what to do.

Roach doesn't do much imo. Chavez Jr. needs to learn defensive tricks for the judging eye. Mosley as a 2nd coach, not in there sparring. I like Stevens reach in jabs and he's quick. Plus it gives Chavez Jr. work to try an land that jab at a smaller target. It's good rangefinding.

And Cotto, Cotto looked better agaisnt Floyd when he was with Pedro Diaz. People are overlooking the Britsch fight. It was a different Chavez Jr. The Chavez family will have investors to provide them a rich and tactical camp. It makes money for everyone involved.

I get that some people thought Canelo v Cotto was close, but it was really like 8-4 and possibly even 9-3. Cotto won some rounds between 7 and 12 once he switched to jabbing and moving...and never really landed anything of significance. However, he did jab well.

This fight is totally different though. Roach's "studying" will be pointless. JCC will be far bigger than Canelo and Canelo will not be moving forward or cutting off the ring. Instead Canelo will be backing up and setting traps, using counters, etc.

Roach's gameplan was ****. Cotto won a few rounds with his experience.

Roach hasn't been relevant since he said Manny beat Floyd (if he was even relevant then)

You're talking about a wide scorecard, that does not mean a fight wasn't close. A fighter can win every round and still have a close fight. Fights are scored on rounds.
The Cotto that fought Trout would have been finished by Canelo. I'm not a huge Roach fan or anything but it's foolish for people to deny that he gave Cotto's career new life.

I don't understand how studying the opponent, and having had a fighter compete against him, would be irrelevant. Just because he came up with one gameplan for a certain fighter doesn't mean he's locked into that one plan. It doesn't change all the info he's absorbed from observing Canelo's habits via studying tape, watching him from ringside, etc.

If you think Roach is wrong, fair enough but those arguments don't make sense. You're looking at this in a very narrow way.

I mean I do agree that some benefit completes a boxer, in this case imo, if Cotto says Roach added something - and I loved his footwork against Alvarez - then yes, perhaps Roach did add something.

I mean LET's HOPE he does somethng, I agree. Better to be optimistic than pessimistic come May 6. It's just that Roach needed a light switch against Crawford or Pascal vs Kova. Imo, his corner commentary or ''advice'' was just garbage...

Lets not get all crazy now. Lets just get Chavez in the gym for multiple days first off or else they are gonna be bringing in all these people & they will just be sitting around playing Xbox waiting for Chavez to show up.

That footwork thing is a great point, not a lot of people recognize that.
I don't think Freddy is the end-all, or even necessarily the best for this situation, but he knows a bit about Canelo and he knows what to expect w/ Jr so there's an experience factor.

I hear rumours that Chavez Sr. might exclusively take the role, and it will EXTREMELY elevate the marketing. There's some footage of him and pops hitting the bag together this week. I think Mexico's ESPN would probably give Sr. the go ahead for leave absence from network commentary, or on the contratory, more on TV to sell the fight. Chavez Jr.'s physique doesn't look bad. Needs to trim it out to Algieri esque.

2017 is going to be great year for boxing! The thing is, if by CHANCE this fight is close, it will inspire a II bout ''revancha'' rematch. I mean we all know the dark secrets of the WBC with Julio Sr. and Whitaker, but THERE's ALOT OF MONEY on this first bout alone. Can't imagine the second one. I'm willing to bet, through connections, Chavez family has dibs on the WBC ''Draw'' decision if it goes 12. GBP vs Chavez brand is a very complicated matter. There's already talks of Mexico City fans favoring the Chavez family and the Mexican-American fans favoring Alvarez.

Top Rank on radar for this bout. Ramirez is on standby.
