At least one of these things is bound to happen in 2017 - Felix Diaz will land a big fight, or the opponents of whom he is in hot pursuit will learn Spanish in a hurry. The once-beaten welterweight contender remains frustrated over the best at 140 and 147 all but refusing to acknowledging his presence. The 2008 Olympic Gold medalist from Dominican Republic scored the biggest win of his career - a 10-round decision over previously unbeaten Sammy Vasquez live in primetime on free-to-air Fox TV last July - and had hoped to parlay the feat into the type of ring opportunity that would change his career.

Crawford's trainer picked John Molina and not Diaz in his last fight because according to him, "he's tailor made for Crawford."

this fight was an obvious duck for crawford and the main reason he didnt win fighter of the year..if he took this fight and won it he'd have 2 fighter of the year award in less than 3 years

Give this guy a shot! He already beat Granados who is getting a shot at Broner and he beat the rising star Sammy Vasquez, and it could be argued that he beat Lamont Peterson! He also beat Gabriel Bracero and Emmanual Lartey, both of which had only one loss at the time. Thats a lot of good comp early!!

minute replacemt opponent, and dude knocked sammys mouthpiece outta his mouth 3 or 4 times. he beat the stuffinnout of sammy vasquez and the judges ruled it a draw. sammy is one tough dude but diaz beat him 9-1 and the judges scored it a draw. thank god the ref wasnt in on the fix--he made them deduct the penalty point that somehow they forgot about.

i dont see crawford havin much trouble with him, but the rest of 140 will lose. hard to say at 147. hes frickin good tho.

He would be a tough fight for Crawford! He gets inside way better than John Molina who was at least able to touch Crawford and a better variety of punches and is more awkward than just about anyone Crawford has fought. He would be a very difficult fight for Crawford.

Love this guy's attitude! He and JRoc are some of the only Haymon fighters who seem to really want to be great boxers and fight the best, not just get paydays. Andrade too but that's lately. Before he was all about contracts too. Definitely my favorite Haymon fighters though since they chase the best. Keith Thurman also a favorite. Danny Garcia was my least favorite but with him fighting Thurman and both him and his dad talking like they're going to crush Thurman, talking big, it feels like they have balls again and they're earning back the respect. It still don't make up for the awful last four years of Danny's career but damn is it hard to hold a grudge against these guys when they're delivering the fight you want. As long as that is happening, in the moment, it's hard to hate on them. But if afterwards it goes back to cherry picks, then in those moments it will be easy. And then at the end of the career, how your opinion of them remains for good will be dependent on just how many times they delivered the good fights, versus how much of their career they didn't. Right now Danny has delivered like 2 good fights I wanted to see out of 10 or so the last few years, so that's pretty bad. And they may only be fighting Thurman because they think he sucks, and because Collazo hurt him, otherwise they might have ducked completely. MAYBE...

But, it seems like they basically just take the easy money as long as Haymon is offering it, because even respecting the sport, it's hard not to when Haymon just has his hand open like that gifting you everything, but once Haymon demands the tough fight, they were never gonna be like Floyd and actually decline it, I think. But again, they did take their time with the interim fight, and with moving up to 147 one pound at a time, and all that... So the hate for Danny ever since Matthysse has been deserved in terms of his opposition. But, man, when Danny and his dad are not spewing total bull**** and hyping up cherry picks and denying people rematches and ****, Danny is actually likeable in some ways. He and his dad haven't needled the fans in awhile either which helps.

Plus, they bring character to the sport. Especially Angel. I'm not saying he's likeable... at times he seems like a scumbag, but at other times he seems to have some humanity too. You should hope the humanity wins out and that he's a good person because sometimes his attitude makes you wonder if that's someone worth supporting. But at other times he speaks the truth and shows some empathy. And Danny can be humble and down to earth when he wants to be, and a pretty vibrant guy. I just didn't like him because the Matthysse fight took forever to make, and then when it finally happened, it was a dud because Danny laced Matthysse's eye in the 4th round, but then instead of rematching which is standard procedure when that happens, Danny ducked the rematch.

I mean a fight takes that long to make, is that antipicated, but then a guy gets injured by an accidental foul 4 rounds in, and you refuse to even give the fans the real fight after he heals? To give them what was promised and took so long to make in the first place? It just adds frustration to frustration. And then Danny never fought another powerful skilled guy again, until now. Years more of cherry picked matchups. Years. So as a boxing fan, I saw Danny as a negative in the sport, not a positive. He didn't have the boring style of a Mayweather or Ward, but he did have cherry picking just as bad as them. So it wasn't the double negative, but that one big negative was still preventing us seeing good fights with Danny either way.

So should I really be a Danny Garcia fan now after all that? I think back around the Matthysse fight, when I was still really invested in that fight, it would have been impossible to be a fan of Danny while he was ducking the rematch. But now that I don't really care about that anymore, it's easier to look past that. Just like all Danny's cherry picking frustrated me so much as a boxing fan at first, but then I just stopped caring about Danny Garcia's career at all and just tuned it out, and focused on guys who would try to fight top guys instead, and it didn't bother me anymore because I was past even expecting anything from him anymore. You can only be disappointed or frustrated in someone if you have higher expectations than what they are putting out. But eventually I had no expectations left, and it was clear even the biased fans had conceded that Danny's career was no longer relevant, so I just stopped paying attention, and figured Danny would never fight a Keith Thurman or anyone like that.

But now he is, and his personality is shining through, and he's really going after Keith with courage and no fear in him right now, which is all commendable. So I can't forget the Matthysse situation, or all the cherry picks, and I suspect Danny beating Thurman would be truly awful for the 147 division, so it's not like I can root for him given what I know about how he picks opponents after "winning" a big fight, but this is a huge first step in the right direction for Danny in terms of regaining fan support. I was one of his BIGGEST detractors and already I am, albeit guardedly because I don't want to get burned again, opening up my respect vault to maybe give Danny some of that respect if Danny picks good opponents from here on out. Danny deserves a ton of credit for taking this fight.

Respect, Danny. But if you did beat Thurman, I would hope you would rematch Khan, or fight Brook, or rematch Matthysse or Thurman if the Thurman fight is close, or fight Porter. I don't want to give you credit again like I did saying how underrated you were back even going into the Khan fight, only to see you turn 147 into a crawl because you string together 4 years of cherry picks. Then I will regret having ever given you credit, and I wouldn't make the mistake a third time. But for this matchup vs Thurman, DSG deserves a lot of credit, and I won't be as critical of him in the future the way things are going.
