  • Can Anyone Say "Fait Accompli"?

Who is Oscar De la Hoya kidding? Who is the media kidding? Who are WE kidding?

Most importantly, who is Floyd Mayweather Sr. kidding?

I could be wrong. I've been wrong before, and I'm sure I'll be wrong again. But with all due respect to Mayweather Sr., he's largely a non-factor in De la Hoya's decision as to whether to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. or not.

Oscar De la Hoya's trainer told USA Today, "I don't give a damn what he wants. I'm the daddy and in this particular situation, I'm calling the shots."

    Uh, not exactly.

Oscar is a businessman. No, check that; he's a money machine, first and foremost, and if he doesn't take a fight with Floyd Jr., it's not going to be because Floyd Sr. stood in the way. The father may very well serve as a very convenient excuse if Oscar decides that it's in his career's best interest to steer away from a fight with the Pretty Boy, so strategically, it's probably best that he remain non-committal about his trainer's status, and how it relates to future plans. We will find out for sure after the Winky/Taylor fight. I think Oscar might got for Winky if he wins. That would be a pretty big fight in itself.

The french phrase translates, "done deal", or something similar. The DLH-Mayweather fight may be edging ever closer to that, but it is not quite a "fait accompli". Sure, if one looks at what are in it for both, the progress appears inexorable; the fight, inevitable. Mayweather is looking to get all the money he can get; as he should and must-- his high pound-for-pound rankings in everybody's list has not given him his just desert in terms of greens. And Oscar is a proven astute businessman. He made more money in defeat than majority of past and present fighters make in victory. But, I think, De La Hoya, at this stage of his career, is looking at two considerations that he wants to forge into two sides of the same coin: his so-called "legacy" and padding further his already deeply-padded (should I say "luxurious"?) nest egg. I think that it is only when Oscar is sure that the twain (legacy and added luxury) have met that he'll put his John Han**** on the paper his own staff at Golden Boy Promotions shall write up. Of the two, the money is certain; it is the winning that may have to be looked deeper into; and, that is where, I think, Oscar's eyes are now cast. All champs want to go out winners. The better the foe, the bigger the win; the bigger the win, the better the exit.
