Comments Thread For: Porter's Trainer: We're Really Pushing Hard For Andre Berto

Kenny Porter, father and head trainer of welterweight contender Shawn Porter (26-2-1, 16 KOs), is trying to secure a fight with Andre Berto. Porter has been out of the ring since losing a June decision to WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

I was sick of Andre Berto 4 years ago. There has to be something better out there for Porter.

Berto's only chance is a puncher's chance, and Porter just took Thurman's best shots for 12 rounds. Having a puncher's chance against maybe the best chin in your division doesn't give you much of a chance now, does it?

I mean, it could be a good action fight, but Berto is much, much, much better off taking:

            - Robert Guerrero rematch
            - Victor Ortiz trilogy fight
            - Brandion Rios if he beats Victor Ortiz
            - Danny Garcia if he loses to Thurman, or even if he wins (but Garcia should aim higher in that case)
            - Soto Karass rematch if he comes back
            - Lucas Matthysse welterweight debut

And the real fight for Berto is Amir Khan. Too bad they are in the same gym because Khan's chin is Berto's easiest road to beating a "name" welterweight and potentially winning a trinket if Khan can take one off someone first.

Those are the fights Berto should be taking on another "knockout kings" card or something. Or as one of the undercard fights to a PPV or something. An action opener that isn't super relevant but could springboard someone forward with a decent win, IF they can improve afterwards.

Berto would be much better off with those fights than Porter. As for Porter, the first name he should look for is Spence, because Spence has never been in deep water like that and Porter could upset the apple cart against a slightly green guy and catapult his career forward. If not Spence, then Porter should try to get Khan. The Brook rematch is not an awful fight. Shawn probably wants that one back but I'd rather see Spence-Brook or Spence-Porter. Lucas Matthysse vs Porter would be something too. Matthysse is too small for 147 but it would still be a hell of a fight.

Otherwise, Berto is a good tune-up fight, not that there is such a thing as a good tune-up but since Porter has fought the best guys he actually deserves one unlike most, so yeah Berto is great for Porter. But Berto would be smart to go in the directions I mentioned instead.

"his father is having a lot of trouble getting any top opponent to face his son"....and who would those top opponents passing up a fight with Shawn be?

Unless you have a belt and/or bring money to the table, nobody is usually interested. Shawn represents neither.

I am pretty sure Berto thinks the same...unless both are being offered good money to face each other I do not see it happening.

I'm hoping you're being sarcastic! You do know what weight class Mayweather retired at? You do know what weight class G still fight at, his whole career?

If you expected Mayweather to fight G in one year notice, why did G tell Ward he had to wait two years plus a catch weight?
