Retiring is the only way to get out of the rematch clause. If he ever fights again he'll have to fight Kovalev first. Let's not act like Ward wouldn't retire. He sat out almost two years over a contract case he kept losing.

I don't see where the extra money he wants will come from. The ppv didn't sell well. Any extra money has to come from his promoter

I could definitely see Ward play some game where he just sits and sits and sits until finally Kov takes another fight, then Ward will jump up and say "im ready for the rematch, oh no Kovalev is busy I guess I'll have to fight some no-name slob instead".

I could DEFINITELY see a scenario like that........

Ward is making Kov sweat for talking so much crap. I doubt he retires. He should honor the immediate rematch clause IMO.

I do think he will try use "retirement" to make some money through an "optional" defense before the rematch.
