I highly doubt many could beat the best at their particular style. The best strikers can't beat world class boxers. I doubt the ones that are good with their feet could compete with the best kickboxers out there. I doubt the best grapplers could compete with the best wrestlers out there. Etc, etc, etc. And that's the main reason why I can't get into the sport. Its very low skill level, even at the highest levels of the sport.
I know what your saying but I think that really is the skill of it. Throwing punches and kicks when at risk of a takedown, taking guys down when being at risk of knees. It's being on guard against everything else that is the skill in itself.

It would seem that way, but thats why its called mix martial arts, you have to be somewhat a jack of all trades and styles as you've said and not on a expert level in all variations, but enough to be that much better than your opponent. Rhonda Rousey is a very proficient black belt in Judo and has competed with top people in her sport and won, if it was all about Judo she'd more than likely have remained undefeated in UFC, but hence it not all about throws and submissions, striking is also involved, so boom...Her demise. I most certainly think cats like Anderson Silva at his peak and now Connor McGregor are very skilled, they're experts in there martial arts and transcend enough in other arts to remain relevant and compete against the world best. Put each one of those guys and girls in there niche art and pretty sure some would be relevant, if not dominate.

Connor couldn't beat ANY professional Boxer in Boxing, he's just taking a page out of Arums playbook: associate yourself with Mayweather and you get famous. And so what you get beat up in a boxing match when youre gonna make more money than you will make in your entire career. Remember Gatti vs Mayweather? Connor will get it worse. But for 20 million, who wouldnt take an ass whipping? If dana white (connor's BOSS) thought a MMA guy could beat a champion boxer in boxing, why wouldnt he let that guy go box, it would only make their sport look even better. But Dana KNOWS what will happen.

There are fighters in the UFC who have proven elite skill in various sports. Overreem in kickboxing was a machine. Stephen thompson was absolutely phenomenal before he moved into MMA.

There are some extremely high level BJJ guys in mma but the problem is their one elite skill is nullified by the mid level knowledge of other arts known by other fighters.

It has to be said though, that whilst there are kickboxers, muay thai, karate and wrestling specialists in UFC, there are absolutely no elite boxers, so if you put any MMA fighter in a straight boxing match with a Euro level boxer, theyd get their heads knocked off..its that simple.

To me, MMA is combat sports equivalent of the decathlon. You respect the people that do it. But its kinda hard to take them seriously when you know what the best in all the events they participate in look like. Its cool that a guy can throw a shot put, then run a distance event, and then run a sprint. But you put him next to Usain Bolt, and he'd get smoked. Matter of fact, he'd get smoked by all the guys Bolt smokes. That's about how I feel about MMA.

He's not wrong, McGregor would barely be considered a prospect in boxing.

If that's the case, why has MMA basically been on a crusade against boxing damn near since its infancy? To me, its like the Arena League trying to compete with the NFL. The Arena league has been relatively successful because they brand themselves as an offseason alternative. If MMA keeps going after boxing, the public is gonna eventually wanna see them put their money where their mouth is. And whoever they send out is gonna get embarrassed.
