I been hearing a lot of moaning about the possibility of a Canelo-Chavez Jr fight.
Let's be clear.
This is a gimmick fight being put together mostly because it's a way for GBP to print money.
It is low risk, high reward for both guys; a loss comes with ready made excuses for either fighter, and a win makes one de facto King of Mexico. Both men get much richer.
Make no mistake, this fight will do a million buys very, very easily.
I get all the criticism. I know the questions.
What has Jr. done to deserve this fight?
If he can fight Jr. at 165 why can't he fight Lil g at 160?
The answer to those questions are "be born a Chavez" and "because GBP is calling the shots and Canelo is the A-side".
It's that simple.
And if you are a Golovkin fan, you'd better hope Jr doesn't sign.
Because if he does, you might be looking at a similar offer being sent to Mr. Him-Good-Boy. Which might actually be a pay cut from the 15M flat he turned down.
Say what you want about Jr. and his lack of dedication but one thing he still has is fans.
Lots of them.
It's the last name, of course. And don't bet against GBP using a successful promotion in this fight as leverage in the negotiations for anything taking place in the future with Golovkin.
That said, Golovkin- and anyone else that cares about boxing- had better hope the fight is a rousing success.
It may be a big hype job, it may even be a mismatch, but boxing itself needs this to be a big fight. It needs it to be at least entertaining, if not competitive.
The numbers this past year have been horrible. And, while boxing is far from in critical danger, the trend started in 2016 needs to be reversed.
A fight with two big names, a little bad blood, for a mythical King of Mexico title might be just what the doctor ordered.
