Comments Thread For: Barclays Exec: Jacobs Will Beat GGG at MSG; Bring Belts to Brooklyn

NEW YORK Brett Yormark would've preferred to have Barclays Center host the Gennady Golovkin-Daniel Jacobs fight. Jacobs (32-1, 29 KOs) is the contracted face of the Barclays Center's Brooklyn Boxing brand and has fought there five times since it opened in 2012. But Yormark, chief executive officer of Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment, understands the reality of the Golovkin-Jacobs middleweight championship showdown taking place March 18 at Madison Square Garden, the Barclays Center's rival venue in New York, long ago nicknamed "The Mecca of Boxing."

Lol, Yormark is trying to save face by saying the Barclay Center was busy that weekend and that's why they couldn't get the fight.

“Unfortunately, being the type of building – we’re busy [at Barclays Center] with hockey [Islanders] and basketball [Nets],” Yormark said during an interview session Thursday that featured Jacobs at the Nets’ training facility in Brooklyn. “And unfortunately, on that weekend I think it’s a hockey game, if I’m not mistaken, so we couldn’t make that weekend work. And obviously there were a lot of [reasons] why that date was important for the media partner [HBO Sports] and others.

This guy sounds sounds like just as much of a d-bag as his twin brother at RN.

Wouldn't it have made more money at the Barclay?

How so? It's a smaller arena by ~2,500 seats. People also say it's less attractive of a venue b/c there's less to do around the arena.
Jacobs likely has a nice price deal with Barclays, but Golovkin has one with MSG as well.

There's no need to "save face"; Brooklyn would've really liked to host the fght, so Yormark is trying to put a smile on a situation that he could've really done nothing about.

K2 controls the event; their TV partner in HBO and their preferred venue on the East Coast is Madison Square Garden. And that's about it.

One thing of note; with Yormark having talked up the event, with Stephen Espinoza having already talked up his interest in the event, the purse bid would've been some really sad **** for K2.

Showtime wasn't going to front a ton of money to have an HBO fighter come on to their network, KO the Showtime fighter, then leave back to HBO. Espinoza was doing his own 'saving-face'.
