For the first time since 2012, unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) will be fighting just twice in a calendar year. Golovkin, who is scheduled to face Daniel Jacobs (32-1, 29 KOs) on March 18th at the Madison Square Garden, will try and rectify that in 2017.

He appears to have the option of a big fight in Kazakhstan in June in a stadium, but that probably depends if he takes any damage or not in March.

I hope so. Time is not on his side.

Asked a buddy in Astana about this, and he basically summed up GGG as a national role model (he said GGG had the same level of following in Khazakhstan as Pac did in the Philippines). He said if GGG fought in Astana, it would be the biggest night in Astana EVER.

Location would likely be the Astana stadium or Bary's Ice Palace, and he would fill either (Astana stadium is 30,000 seats).

Also, as GGG's parents are Russian and Korean, many Russians sort of see him as one of their own too, and he has a big following there as well.

Should be easy to get an opponent from any of the rated Ukrainian or Russian guys - quite a few of them, maybe even Khurtsidze now that the WBO just stiffed him. Korobov would be interesting too.

If he wins all the fights he wants next year, he's an early candidate for fighter of the year.
