Comments Thread For: Jerry Jones: Cotto-Kirkland Will Draw 10,000-Plus to The Star

Two fighters Canelo Alvarez has beaten won't draw the type of crowd the Mexican superstar helped lure to Jerry Jones' football stadium September 17. Jones still expects the Miguel Cotto-James Kirkland fight to be successful at the gate February 25 in Frisco, Texas. The Dallas Cowboys' owner says he expects a crowd in excess of 10,000 to attend the HBO Pay-Per-View main event between Puerto Rico's Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) and Kirkland (32-2, 28 KOs), of Austin, Texas, at his team's training facility The Ford Center at The Star.

alot of Mexicans from Mexico supported cotto over Canelo. Mexican Americans for some reason though have an undying passion for Canelo.

stop lying LMAO Canleo fought in a heavy pro Canelo crowd because Mexicans came supporting him. Plus I was shocked how many Canelo cheers he was getting from fans in the NY media presser. Cotto didn't get anywhere near that reaction in the Mexican heavy cities they stopped on their tour. Most Mexicans still hate Cotto because of the Margarito shyt.

No clue why this fight is in Texas when there are no damn puerto ricans living in texas. Why not have this fight in NY, east coast or hell even Orlando in heavy puerto rican areas to bank on his fanbase. Cotto fills up those arenas and there is just a better atmosphere. Hell you could of staged this fight on the island. Just like it made no sense to have Leo Santa Cruz fight Frampton in NY when he has a huge Mexican and LA following. Also put Santa Cruz at a disadvantage.

No you're wrong. I was there at the Mandalay Bay to watch the Canelo-cotto fight live.
While there was alot of Puerto Rican's there rooting for cotto, Canelo had the biggest fanbase that day.

That's a straight lie. I've been to a few Canelo fights, recently at cowboys stadium, and I can tell you Canelo has crossover appeal. I saw African Americans, Asians, and white people all wearing Canelo gear. With PAC and mayweather leaving Canelo is the next recognizable name in boxing. Just go to a Canelo fight in Texas and you will see first hand. This I heard it through the g****vine bs is misinformation. Texas is a Canelo state. No ifs, ands, or buts. It's not even close.

It isn't that Cotto has more fans than Canelo; it's that the Mexican media coverage had Cotto winning a comfortable decision, even calling him a monster throughout the fight.

Both PR and Mexico thought Cotto won; it was the American media coverage (under the illusion of a subsequent Canelo-Golovkin fight) which saw Canelo win, with their sole argument being that Canelo was so heavy his shots must count triple, even if Cotto was outboxing him.

I deeply disagree...Cotto was robbed that night.
