All he's gonna be doing is hurting his own promoter in the end. There's coming into negotiations as the winner, then there's grossly over valuing yourself. If ward thinks he should get more money than last time after those numbers, then he's a prima donna...nothing more. I think it's just a bunch of talk to try to strengthen his bargaining position, but he needs to lay off. It's not like he separated himself from kovalev, it was a razor thin decision that could have, and arguably should have gone the other way. I hope the rematch comes off and i think it probably will, but all this talk adds a bit of doubt.

I don't get it. Two guys sign a contract to fight. A contract that includes a rematch clause and sets the split and whatever. They fight. the loser wants to do the rematch and he's the ******. But the winner might make them run through hoops and delay and renegotiate and people cheer that? Why even have a rematch clause then?

Dude knew about the rematch **** from the get go. This is equivalent to a guy winning a belt with a mandatory next fight and then wants to have a voluntary.

The problem they have and when I mean "they" I mean both sides, is that the first fight sold like ****. Which means there is going to be a reluctance from the networks to put on an immediate rematch, actually that is incorrect, there will be a reluctance to put it on ppv. So now you are talking normal HBO, and in that case, you are talking about a couple of million for the A-side fighter - absolute maximum, and to achieve that the B-side fighter will probably have to take less than a million.

Will Ward take this fight for $2-3 million? No.
Will Kovalev take this fight for $800k? Even $1 million? No.

I think there are a lot of hurdles to getting this fight done, the main one being - will HBO put this on ppv again? Doubtful, and if not will Showtime take it on? If by some minor miracle someone actually does take it on as a ppv, will the promoters be willing to take another risk, and potential financial loss? If they get past all that - can they agree purses with the individual fighters?

The more I think about it, the more I think the fight is not going to happen straight away. I understand there is an immediate rematch clause, but it also has to make sense financially for everyone involved. Expect a lot of posturing in the press - Duva accusing Ward of ducking, and vice versa, but deep down even though Kovalev will badly want the rematch straight away, his team will understand that its far from straight forward, and maybe not the best business decision.

I'm sure Kovalev doesn't care about that, or lets say he cares less than Ward, because to him its still a lot of money, and he just wants his belts back. But it will be hard if not impossible to bring Ward back to the table unless its a significant number, and I don't blame Ward for wanting that. Both guys deserve more money than last time.

I thought he lost the fight decisively. But in the second half he did seem to find something. He may have seen something that he knows he can exploit but he needs Kovalev to come at him. Ward is pretty smart, on some level he must know he needs to rematch him or look the fool.
