He took Joe who had little to no boxing skills and made him an atg champion.
What is your take?
Joe was not an all-time great. He was fortunate enough to fight in a division that was very weak at the time he was fighting. In spite of this, he was well protected throughout his career. He fought both Hopkins and Jones when they were well past their prime. That is the only reason he defeated them. If Joe were fighting today, he would be the equivalent of Lucian Bute -- a B-level fighter capable of beating C-level opponents.

He did a great job with his son but I don't think that makes him as good a trainer as trainers who have trained and taught many boxers to become world champions.

Didn't he also train Enzo Maccarinelli, Cleverly, Rees and Lockett?
3 of them held world titles and 1 of them had a title shot.
None of them are great fighters by any means, but for a guy who had literally no background in boxing, it's pretty good!
