Anyone know how rematch clause work?

Title. What happens if they refuse to give the opponent a rematch? Get sued for crazy amount of money?

rematch clauses are built into contracts for the original bout. If a fighter refuses to allow a rematch when all stipulations have been met form the original bout, they are liable to be sued.

Klitschko for example, is exploring the legal avenues he has for sueing Fury for failure to rematch or at least cover costs of his camp.

Alot of fighters are open to rematches as more often than not, the originals made good money and its financially a good option for all involved, it can have its downsides though as if you win a belt and that governing body then enforces you to fight its mandatory, as they already allowed that fight to be bypassed to facilitate yours, then it can lead to the boxer being stripped of his belt if he chooses a rematch, again e,g. fury and the IBF belt.

They can be sued if the conditions in the original contract, wth the rematch clause, were met but the rematch was avoided by the party.

its why Ward is in a tricky position right now, unless the contract is very much on his side. If not, then he'll have to pay Kov step aside money.

... only if the contract stipulates "step aside money"... but what if the contract doesn't stipulate a limit to liabilities?... As long as the contract isn't open to the public, no one actually knows what the rematch clause consists in...

In the cas of Ward-Kovalev, Duva has said that the Rematch clause terms were already agreed to when Ward and Kovalev signed the first bout agreement. Ward is talking like he has other options, I'm assuming he doesn't. If he doesn't fight Kovalev, not only does he lose all respect from boxing fans, but I'd guess he'd get sued by Main Events and not be able to fight anyone else legally until it was settled.

... but Ward may take "the Fury way" as well... Look at Klitschko: he's 40 years old and he already lost one year and a half because of the "Fury rematch"...

I guess he could and I hope that doesn't happen because it would sideline Kovalev as well. If Ward doesn't take the immediate rematch then he just a fraud who's doubting himself...

I think Ward could have some tricky outs too doe. For example I've heard that his contracts with both HBO & Roc Nation have been fulfilled.

So for an easy example lets say Showtime offers Ward a deal. Ward accepts. Now Ward can't fight off Showtime & Kovalev can't fight off of HBO. How do you rematch now? Joint ppv for a fight that did poor PPV numbers from what I've heard?

Or lets say Roc Nation doesn't re-sign Ward so now Ward gots to get with another promoter or go promoter-less. Ward got $5M for the first fight (how much for the fight vs whatever Roc Nation gave him on top is debatable & probably an unknown right now). If there is a rematch clause there is SURELY wording that discusses the purses to make that rematch & I gotta figure its possible that without Roc Nation to overpay Ward those numbers might not be doable for Duva unless she's willing to take a big risk that the fight does better &/or that Kovalev wins.

And this is just assuming there aren't other outs. Anyone worth a damn who's representing you today should always be including clauses that give their guy an out for mandatory's & its unreasonable to force fights within a certain time period thus a guy could "be injured" or just be inactive til a mandatory pops up so I could easily see that angle used for full effect in Ward's case.

I would imagine Ward's first obligation is to honor the rematch clause. So if he puts himself in a situation where he signs with Showtime and can't fight on HBO where Kovalev is obligated, he could be liable for obstruction. That's for the courts to decide.

At anyrate, Ward's using the retirement talk, maybe for leverage, maybe for real.
