Marciano's skills are very underated, there's method behind the great fighters rampaging style.
Marciano KO.
I agree. Marciano was a slugger in most critics' eyes, but he was very smart about it. I always thought Liston was similar, though. It would be tough to determine the outcome of this fight, but I guess Marciano's stamina would be the deciding factor. Marciano by late round KO.
The thing is had marciano fought today, he would have lost several by tko cause of the stricter refs.
Yep, you're exactly right. Today, the ref's have such a strict policy when it comes to fights. Back in the day, the refs would basically let you fight until you were hospital material.
Marciano was certainly more skilled than the reputation he gets. Muhammad Ali himself said that Marciano was quite difficult to hit with his jab (the two sparred when Ali was in his prime and Marciano was in his forties).
Rocky wins this one on toughness. Marciano threw hard punches at a constant rate throughout the fight. He wasn't that quick or accurate but he would aim at easy targets like your chest or arms and so he actually connected with a higher percent than you'd think. While most fighters would be wasting their times socking their opponents in the biceps, Marciano hit so hard and so often that it was an effective method of crippling and reducing an opponents defense. Just ask Roland LaStarza, who was hit with such force to his arms that he had to go to the hospital to get bone fragments removed and ruptured blood vessels repaired. When people in boxing say that a fighter has "bone crushing" power it is usually hyperbole. With Marciano, it was a matter of fact description.
