Comments Thread For: "Fighting Words" - Five Biggest Storylines From This Busy Coming Weekend

by David P. Greisman - This coming weekend is nowhere near the biggest weekend in boxing this year. But it is one of the busiest. Boxing is dying man. "Storylines"? Every story seems to end with cheating or corruption or ducking the best fights. There are no more complete storylines in boxing. Just bits and pieces of competition and excitement in between the next bought off referee or judge, in between the next duck, the next "business" move. Just dust in the wind blowing by our car window as we drive down the road to decline, away from the people we thought we were and the memories fading out like car exhaust that phases slowly into the atmosphere, ultimately becoming indistinguishable, like those sad memories of a sport that used to exist in color, but now is only shadow... My precious boxing... They stole it from us.

In other words, business has trumped sport and now the sport is dying and can no longer generate business, outside of rare exceptions.

They need to go back to same day weigh-ins and maybe do 14 round fights, definitely need more than 12, and have referees actually enforce the rules. Go back to one champion per division. That is so damn important. One champion per division. No more multiple sanctioning bodies. Otherwise, boxing will continue to decline.

            Boxing is dying?

Showtime has a couple of great fights this weekend. If you can't get excited for them then I don't know what to tell you.

Boxing is far from dying. You got an AWESOME fight between Charlo vs. J-Rock and Mares vs. Cuellar. AND next month we have Leo Santa Vs. Frampton. How is that dying.

Hmmmm... I didn't realize Charlo was moving up, but I'm glad that he is. 154 has a bunch of young talent and 160 is looking pretty bad. We need more guys to start competing against each other.

It would be nice if Quigg went back down to 122 and fought Rigo like he said he would...

There are some good fights coming up. Boxing has been better, but I won't go doom nd gloom. There are plenty of things to fix about it, but there are still great matches coming up.

                    Boxing Logic, I feel ya.

The sport would create superior entertainment if:

                    1) An umbrella organization comprised of a union of former athletes determines who fights who based on merit.
                    2) By law, force promoters to bid on fights (not individual athletes) to eliminate political silos that prevent premium match ups.
